Al-Nusra must either leave Aleppo or be defeated – Vitaly Churkin

If rebels in eastern Aleppo break from Al-Nusra Front militants, the latter must face leaving voluntarily or be annihilated, Russia’s envoy to the UN said, adding that the 8-hour ceasefire on October 20 can be extended, but only if various sides agree.

European Parliament calls on Japan to end whale hunting

Members of European Parliament (MEPs) gathered for a plenary session in Strasbourg, pressing on Wednesday for the European Council and the European Commission to condemn the decision by Japan to resume whale hunting and to catch 333 small rorqual whales during the 2015-2016 season.

Armenia's Sargsyan slams Erdogan’s absence at genocide centennial

In an interview with FRANCE 24, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s decision to change this year’s Gallipoli commemoration to coincide with Armenia’s marking of the 100th anniversary of the genocide was a “cynical act”.

New Zealand deploying troops to fight ISIL in Iraq

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key confirmed on Tuesday that more than 100 New Zealand troops will be sent to Iraq to help in the fight against Islamic State insurgents.

The government had decided to deploy a military training mission to Iraq as part of New Zealand's overall contribution to the international coalition against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Key said in a statement.

Turkey fails in bid to join UN Security Council. (Spain made it in the third ballot)

Spain beats Turkey in third ballot, will join Venezuela, New Zealand, Angola and Malaysia in UN's most powerful body....

Venezuela, New Zealand, Spain, Angola and Malaysia were elected Thursday to coveted seats on the United Nations Security Council, while Turkey failed in its effort to join the UN's most powerful body.
Neither Turkey nor Spain got enough votes in the first or second ballot of the election by the General Assembly's member states. Spain made it in the third ballot. Special attention had been on Turkey as it is under growing pressure to do more about the war in Syria pushing up against its border.

SYDNEY: Sydney kicked off New Year celebrations with a dazzling fireworks spectacular, the first in a wave of pyrotechnics to usher in 2014 from Hong Kong to world record-chasing Dubai.
Seven tonnes of explosives lit up Australia's biggest city, with fireworks shooting off the Opera House for the first time in more than 10 years as part of the December 31 extravaganza, focused on the Harbour Bridge.
