Hong Kong on Monday canceled more than 180 flights as Typhoon Nida, which is generating winds up to 93 miles per hour, approached its shores
Nida, also called Tropical Storm Carina, is one of the most powerful typhoons of the year. The Hong Kong International Airport canceled flights scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. The Hong Kong Observatory on Monday issued a Tropical Cyclone Signal 3 at noon, closing all kindergarten schools and special needs classes. The observatory later increased its advisory to the third highest warning, Tropical Cyclone Signal 8.
"The weather will deteriorate rapidly after sunset. There will be squalls, heavy rain and rough seas. There may be flooding in low-lying areas," the Hong Kong Observatory said, adding that the storm is expected to arrive in China's southern provinces during high tide -- increasing the risk of flooding.
The China National Commission for Disaster Reduction agency has urged residents to stock up on provisions to last from one to three days. Strong winds are expected to last throughout Monday night and into Tuesday morning as it moves inland and weakens.
Nida hit the Philippines with about 11 inches of rain in the country's northern regions, triggering flash flood and sandslide warnings.

ReplyDeleteHong Kong s'est réveillée mardi au ralenti après le passage du typhon Nida, qui a entraîné l'annulation de centaines de vols et provoqué la fermeture des écoles, de la majorité des commerces et de la Bourse. Des vents soufflant en rafale à 151 km/h ont balayé dans la nuit l'ex-colonie britannique. Aucune victime n'était signalée, mais les autorités ont mis en garde contre un risque d'inondations et de glissement de terrains dans certaines zones en raison des pluies torrentielles. Jonchées de branches d'arbres, les rues de la ville étaient désertes mardi matin, les transports publics n'offrant qu'un service très limité. Autour de certains bâtiments, des échaffaudages en bambou pendaient dangereusement. Un porte-parole de l'autorité aéroportuaire a indiqué à l'AFP que seuls 325 vols étaient maintenus mardi entre 06H00 et 21H00 (22H00 GMT lundi et 13H00 GMT mardi), contre 1.100 en temps normal. La Bourse de Hong Kong n'a pas ouvert mardi matin en raison du maintien de l'alerte météorologique au typhon T8, le troisième niveau d'alerte le plus élevé. Les autorités hongkongaises ont indiqué que l'intensité des vents devrait diminuer progressivement dans la journée. Nida est le premier typhon majeur de la saison à frapper Hong Kong.
