Russia-US reset impossible amid sanctions

A reset of Russia-U.S. relations is impossible if sanctions against Moscow remain, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Wednesday.

"It is absolutely impossible. Let's be clear: we did not come up with these sanctions; our international partners did," Medvedev said in an interview with CNBC.

Noting the sanctions will dissipate after a while, the prime minister said "we can't deny the fact that they have damaged our relations."

"In my opinion, it's an absolutely destructive, and I would even go as far as saying, a stupid position," Interfax news agency quoted him as saying.

Resetting Russian-US relations is impossible as long as sanctions against Russia are in effect, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview with CNBC TV channel.

"It's absolutely impossible. Let's be clear: we did not come up with these sanctions. Our international partners did," Medvedev said. The prime minister noted that any suggestion of a "reset" is out of the question.

By pulling back troops from the border with Ukraine, Russia did not intend “to give a signal” to Washington, Medvedev noted. “This is not a signal to Washington. It is Russia’s domestic decision. This can be interpreted in any way, but this is not a signal,” the premier said. “Any decisions that Russia takes, including those regarding our armed forces, are within our authority, the authority of the Russian president, and are not linked with the situation we witness there (in Ukraine), though we are certainly quite strongly concerned about it," Medvedev explained.

  • Medvedev believes that amid Western sanctions, other countries will take niches which European partners held previously on the Russian market.

“Eventually pragmatic considerations, the possibility to earn money will prevail, and these niches, which will become vacant if European producers quit, will be filled,” he said. "I would like to note that we do not seek this, and the current situation can be reversed in theory," Medvedev noted.

  1. The Russian PM has suggested that Obama’s charges against Russia were caused by a “brain aberration” and added that such rhetoric saddened him....

“I am very upset by the fact that President Obama, while speaking from the United Nations’ podium and listing the threats and challenges humanity is currently facing, put Ebola in first place, the Russian Federation second and the Islamic State organization was only in the third place. I don’t even want to comment on this, this is some sort of aberration in the brain,” Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview with CNBC television.

The top Russian official stressed that his country was not isolating itself from the rest of the world, but sought mutually beneficial cooperation with foreign nations. “We want to communicate with all civilized peoples on friendly grounds. Of course, this includes our partners from the United States of America, but for this the situation must be leveled,” Medvedev said.......................http://rt.com/politics/196132-medvedev-reset-america-impossible/
