'Fierce battle' under way in Kharkiv after Russian attack

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said a "fierce battle" is under way in his country's northeastern Kharkiv region after Moscow launched a surprise new offensive there.

"Russia launched a new wave of counter-offensive actions in this area. Ukraine met them there with our troops, brigades and artillery... Now there is a fierce battle under way in this direction," Mr Zelensky said in a press conference in Kyiv.

Russian forces launched an armoured ground attack in the northeastern Kharkiv region early this morning, advancing one kilometre near the border town of Vovchansk in an effort to create a buffer zone, a senior Ukrainian military source said.

  1. Ukraine says it has repelled a Russian armoured attack in the north-eastern Kharkiv region, after Moscow's forces launched an incursion across the border and sought to break through defensive lines.

Kharkiv regional head Oleh Syniehubov said Russian reconnaissance groups had tried to penetrate the border, adding that "not a single metre has been lost".

"Russia has launched a new wave of counteroffensive operations in the Kharkiv sector," said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

  3. Ukraine rushed reinforcements to its northeastern Kharkiv region to hold off a Russian attempt to breach local defenses, authorities said

  4. Though Russia likely can’t capture Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, it could compel Ukraine to send more troops to the region, leaving other areas more vulnerable to attack. Also, forcing Ukrainian authorities to evacuate civilians is likely to create disruption and divert resources.

“The entire town is under massive shelling now, it is not safe to stay here,” Vovchansk administration head Tamaz Hambarishvili told Ukraine’s Hromadske Radio.

  5. The Ukrainian military has lost approximately 3,300 soldiers in fights with Russia’s western and central groupings of forces in the past week, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday.
Over the past seven days, the western grouping of forces took control of Kyselevka and Kotlyarovka settlements in the Khrakov region and repelled 14 Ukrainian counterattacks, according to the ministry. The Ukrainian forces lost up to 1,015 servicepeople in battles, the ministry added.

    1. The US Administration believes that the Russian Armed Forces have started their offensive on Kharkov, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said.

"We have been anticipating that Russia would launch an offensive against Kharkov, which appears now to have begun," Kirby said. " We’ve been coordinating closely with Ukraine to help them prepare".
