US lobbies Turkey over fight against ISIS/ISIL (John Kerry presses Turkish leaders)

The United States has pressed Turkey to support military-led action against the Islamic State group (IS) in Iraq and Syria, a day after Ankara said it would not allow its air bases to be used for combat operations.
US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in the Turkish capital on Friday for talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, aimed at winning support for armed operations.

After a two-hour-long meeting between Erdogan and Kerry, the president's office said, "the two countries will continue to fight against the terrorist organisations in the regions."

Turkey will continue to share intelligence the United States, give logistical support to Syrian opposition and humanitarian aid to victims of the war in Syria, the statement added.
US officials played down hopes of persuading Ankara to take a significant role in any military involvement, saying the talks would focus on issues including Turkey's efforts to stem the flow of foreign fighters crossing its territory and its role in providing humanitarian assistance.
Turkey has so far conspicuously avoided committing to President Barack Obama's plan to strike IS-held areas on both sides of the Syrian-Iraqi borders.

  2. “ISIL, Turkey: Dream of Restoring the Glories of Sublime Ottoman State”...

“We have witnessed the severity of the ISIL organization in demolishing all the shrines, temples and tombs, even those that are attributed to the prophets and the companions, as being a manifestation of shirk (polytheism), as said by them. However, when it comes to the shrine of the grandfather of the Turkish Ottomans “Suleiman Pasha” inside Syria and in the areas under the ISIL control, not only did ISIL refrain from destroying it, but facilitated the entry of Turkish troops to such shrines and protected them. The ISIL forces are to date protecting it and did not destroy it”.

The writer Nawaf Qadimi passed these words unnoticed, and in a two-part article published in the “Al-Arabi Al-Jadeeed” newspaper, funded by Qatar, the Saudi Muslim Brotherhood writer answered a question title: “A big question ... how was the ISIL created?”, then another annex followed under the title “Back to the question ... who stands behind the ISIL?”. The answer came sequentially: the government of Nouri al-Maliki in Iraq, the Islamic Republic of Iran, all the way to Syria ... they are all clearly naïve about what is meant by Qadimi’s above mentioned turn of phrase.

Recep Tayyeb Erdogan stood on July/2012 before his Party’s audience to justify the intervention of his government in the crisis in Syria, saying: It is that we are the descendants of the Seljuks, and the remnants of the Sublime Ottoman State... “The Justice and Development Party (AKP) is a party in which the spirit of the Seljuks* and the Ottomans is deeply rooted”. Putting emphasis on his position, he repeated it while addressing another speech on September in the same year, saying: “We are walking in our conqueror ancestors’ footsteps starting from Sultan Alp Arslan* reaching to Fatih Sultan Mehmet “the Conquer”*. Having assumed power in 1046 AD, Alp Arslan, the second ruler of the Seljuk state, has been able to expand the boundaries of his state inciting sectarianism in his wars against the Fatimids, particularly. During his reign, Nezamiyeh schools, which were toughening up a certain doctrine and which considered other Islamic doctrines as infidels, have been established. He also lavished funds on advocates being brought by him to Baghdad to accuse the Fatimids as infidels and to call for fighting them. Perhaps Alp Arslan’s inheritance, which Erdogan is glorifying, help us understand Turkey’s policy not only in terms of its interference in the Syrian crisis, but even regarding its support for the Takfiri organizations, the foremost the ISIL.....................http://www.almanar.com.lb/english/adetails.php?eid=170905&cid=22&fromval=1

  3. Turkey is a steady source of ISIS recruits...

ANKARA, Turkey: Having spent most of his youth as a drug addict in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Turkey's capital, Can did not think he had much to lose when he was smuggled into Syria with 10 of his childhood friends to join the world's most extreme jihadist group.

After 15 days at a training camp in the Syrian city of Raqqa, the de facto headquarters of the group, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, the 27-year-old Can was assigned to a fighting unit. He said he shot two men and participated in a public execution. It was only after he buried a man alive that he was told he had become a full ISIS fighter.

"When you fight over there, it's like being in a trance," said Can, who asked to be referred to only by his middle name for fear of reprisal. "Everyone shouts, 'God is the greatest,' which gives you divine strength to kill the enemy without being fazed by blood or splattered guts," he said.

Hundreds of foreign fighters, including some from Europe and the United States, have joined the ranks of ISIS in its self-proclaimed caliphate that sweeps over vast territories of Iraq and Syria. But one of the biggest source of recruits is neighboring Turkey, a NATO member with an undercurrent of Islamist discontent.

As many as 1,000 Turks have joined ISIS, according to Turkish news media reports and government officials here. Recruits cite the group's ideological appeal to disaffected youths as well as the money it pays fighters from its flush coffers. The C.I.A. estimated last week that the group had from 20,000 to 31,500 fighters in Iraq and Syria..................http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/middle-east/Turkey-is-a-steady-source-of-ISIS-recruits/articleshow/42584050.cms
