Turkish FM urges 'binding decison' from U.N. on Syria

Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu called on the U.N Security Council to pass a 'binding decision' on the Syrian crisis, describing it as the worst human tragedy since World War II.

Davutoglu said during a session of the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Thursday that Syrian civilians are lucky to find shelter in neighboring countries. "At least they do not face attacks and starvation...7 million displaced Syrians face hunger and brutal attacks," he said. "The recently published photos allegedly showing torture by the Syrian regime reflects their 'medieval mentality'," he added.

He strongly criticized the international community for its inaction, but praised the Syrian opposition as it stand outs at the conference.

Davutoglu reiterated his support for a political peace process that leads to a transitional government and the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Syrian people.

According to the U.N., more than 100,000 people have been killed in Syria and 2.3 million others have been driven from their homes since the uprising began in March 2011.

  1. Syrian Regime: Torture Photographs ‘Fake’...

The Syrian Justice Ministry has denied accusations that President Assad’s regime has conducted systematic torture and killing of opposition figures.

A team of internationally renowned war crimes prosecutors and forensic experts issued a report based on photographic evidence of dead bodies, allegedly tortured detainees. The CNN and The Guardian were exclusively given the report earlier this week.

The photographs were also shown at the opening of the Geneva-2 peace conference on Wednesday by the head of the opposition Syrian National Coalition, Ahmad Jarba.

The Justice Ministry called the photographs “fake” and the report “politicized and lacking in objectivity and professionalism”, in a statement for the SANA new agency.

The experts' report was partly sponsored by the government of Qatar, the CNN reveals. Qatar and Saudi Arabia provide most of the outside support for Syria's rebel forces.

“The report aims to undermine the efforts to bring peace in Syria and put an end to the international sponsored terrorism in the country”, the Ministry’s statement concludes.

The Geneva-2 peace conference will continue on Friday, when representatives of the Assad regime and the opposition are set to meet in private, in the presence of UN negotiators.
