Haftar's LNA Vows to Continue Tripoli Offensive Despite Russia-Turkey Ceasefire Initiative

Libyan National Army
The Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar welcomes the ceasefire initiative by Russia and Turkey, but will continue the fight for Tripoli, the LNA commander said in a statement on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Russia and Turkey agreed on a common position with respect to a Libya settlement, and presidents Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on all parties to cease fire from January 12.

"The LNA command welcomes the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the president of the friendly Russian state, aimed at establishing peace ... but declares that the efforts of the armed forces in the war against terrorist groups will continue," the statement said.
Earlier, AFP reported Haftar rejected calls for a ceasefire by Turkey and Russia.

  1. Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at a joint press conference about ending the ongoing conflicts in Libya, saying peace talks are already happening and will continue.

Libya peace talks are planned in Berlin, announced Putin and Merkel, following calls for a ceasefire in the country.

"We hope that the joint efforts by Russia and Turkey will lead to success, and we will soon send out invitations for a conference in Berlin,” Merkel added.

Putin and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan have been calling for a ceasefire between all warring parties in Libya at the conference in Istanbul earlier this week. The Russian leader also discussed the peace process in the country with Mohammed Bin Zayed, deputy supreme commander of the United Arab Emirates armed forces, and Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

“It’s time to make the necessary measures to find a timely end to this war, to overcome the division inside the country and to form unified state institutions,” Putin said on Saturday.

  3. The navy forces of the Libyan National Army under the command of marshall Khalifa Haftar have detained an Italian ship heading to the city of Misrata, which is under the control of the UN-approved Libyan government, a navy official said on Sunday.

As-Sabit added that the Italian ship is a commercial vessel. According to the official, the LNA will release the ship after it unloads its cargo in Benghazi, provided that the army finds nothing suspicious or illegal on board.

  7. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to teach Libyan militia leader Khalifa Haftar a “lesson” if he does not cease his attacks on forces loyal to the UN-backed government in Tripoli.

Erdogan said in a speech that the “putschist Haftar ran away” from negotiations being held in Moscow, and that Ankara would not hesitate to teach him “a lesson” if he continues military action against the Government of National Accord (GNA).

The Turkish leader claimed that Haftar had first agreed to sign the ceasefire before abruptly leaving Moscow. Despite the setback, Erdogan stated that he was still planning to take part in further talks on Libya.

  9. A media arm of the Libyan National Army (LNA) has said their forces targeted a cargo vessel that ferried ammunition and weapons from Turkey to the embattled port of Tripoli, where the UN-backed government is headquartered.

“The Turkish ship loaded with weapons and ammunition that docked this morning at the port of Tripoli was destroyed,” reads a short statement published by an LNA Facebook account. It didn’t elaborate on the attack, which appears to have taken place on Tuesday afternoon.

However, Brigadier Khaled Al Mahjoub of the LNA told Al-Arabiya that the vessel had arrived in violation of an arms embargo and was carrying weapons for armed militias.

According to the LNA, by delivering the cargo, Ankara has violated an international agreement banning arms sales to the country.
