‘Illogical rumors’: Iran responds to US media reports that Ukrainian Boeing was hit by missile over Tehran

Ukrainian Boeing was hit by missile over Tehran
Iranian civil aviation authorities rejected as 'scientifically impossible' the media reports that the Ukrainian passenger jet departing Tehran was shot down by a missile, and called the scenario 'illogical rumors'.

"Scientifically, it is impossible that a missile hit the Ukrainian plane, and such rumours are illogical," Ali Abedzadeh, head of Iran's of Civil Aviation Organization, said on Thursday, according to the news agency ISNA.

Citing anonymous Pentagon and intelligence officials, US media have reported that the Boeing 737 was “highly likely” brought down by Iranian air defenses. The Ukrainian International Airlines flight 752 crashed within minutes of departing Tehran, just hours after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired two volleys of missiles at US targets inside Iraq, as reprisal for last week’s assassination of General Qassem Soleimani.

    1. Canadian PM Justin Trudeau has come out as the first world leader to directly accuse Iran of “unintentional” shooting down of the Ukrainian International Airlines flight 752 over Tehran, citing intelligence reports.
“We have intelligence from multiple sources,” Trudeau said on Thursday. “The intelligence indicates that the plane was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile. This may well have been unintentional.”

    2. Премьер-министр Канады Джастин Трюдо заявил, что у Оттавы есть данные разведки, свидетельствующие о том, что украинский Boeing в Тегеране был сбит иранской ракетой. Об этом сообщает CBC.

  2. The head of Civil Aviation Organization of Islamic Republic of Iran (CAO.IRI) underlined that no missile had hit the Ukrainian passenger plane and any comment on the missile strike is out of context and not scientifically-backed and the reason behind the crash is determined after reopening of the black box.

At the end of a special session on the causes of the crash of the Ukrainian passenger plane, Ali Abedzadeh said on Friday that in the past two days, there has been news from the US and Canadian politicians that "we expect the specialized news to reach the world in a relevant way".

We emphasize that if the statements of US and Canadian politicians are from the two countries' disaster investigation agencies, they should be announced through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Like Iran, which released the initial crash report on its airline's website, the United States should also have the audacity to give the scientific backing of its findings to the world, according to the ICAO Annex structure, the head of Civil Aviation Organization of Islamic Republic of Iran stated.

Abedzadeh noted that the information contained in the aircraft's black box on flight parameters and pilot talk is critical to the CAO.IRI's comment, so the black box was designed to analyze hundreds of flight information and extract from them. Any information before analyzing the Black box analysis is not scientifically-based.

He underlined that he is confident that the aircraft was not hit by a missile, the aircraft was flying for more than 1.5 minutes caught fire and the crash site indicates that the pilot had decided to return.

On the reason behind the fact that pilot had not contacted Mehrabad watchtower to change the flight route, the head of the Civil Aviation Organization of Islamic Republic of Iran stressed that the pilot was struggling to save the plane and did not have the opportunity to contact and after take off he has contacted the control tower to ask for a 26,000-foot altitude.

He said Iran has the ability to read the black box under normal circumstances, but it is difficult to extract information directly because of damage to the black box. We need special software and hardware available in the country, but if we can't extract information because of the black box damage, we will get help from other countries.

  3. Делегация, состоящая из 10 канадских специалистов, направилась в Тегеран, чтобы расследовать обстоятельства катастрофы с самолётом «Международных авиалиний Украины».

  4. Spokesman for the Iranian Administration Ali Rabiei condemned the US government for “spreading lies” about a Ukrainian airliner that crashed in northern Iran, saying Washington should wait for the results of the ongoing probe into the Boeing 737 crash.

    1. The spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry slammed the early assessments by some Western media officials that a Ukrainian airliner carrying dozens of civilians have been shot down in the Islamic Republic, saying Tehran has invited Kiev to take part in the investigation.

  5. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said on Thursday that it will join Iran's probe into the fatal crash of a Ukrainian passenger plane near Tehran.

    1. Iran says its military "unintentionally" shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet, killing all 176 people on board, Iran's state TV reports.
The statement said it had done so due to "human error" after the plane flew close to a sensitive site belonging to Iran's Revolutionary Guards.
Mistaken for a "hostile target", the jet was hit by a missile, the statement said.
Those responsible would be held accountable, it added.

  6. ‘Human error at time of crisis caused by US adventurism led to disaster’: FM Zarif on Iran’s downing of Flight 752

    1. Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said “human error” was behind the downing of a Ukrainian plane that crashed Wednesday southwest of the Iranian capital Tehran....

“A sad day. Preliminary conclusions of internal investigation by Armed Forces: Human error at time of crisis caused by US adventurism led to disaster. Our profound regrets, apologies and condolences to our people, to the families of all victims, and to other affected nations,” Zarif said in a tweet on Saturday.

It came after the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran said in a statement earlier in the day that the country’s military "unintentionally" shot down the passenger jet after it flew close to a sensitive site.

Those responsible would be held accountable, the statement said.

  7. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered the government to make public the findings of an inquiry into the unintentional downing of the Ukrainian Boeing 737 over Tehran by Iranian forces, Iranian state media reported on Saturday.

According to the broadcaster IRIB, Khamenei convened an emergency meeting of Iran's Supreme Council for National Security immediately after he was informed about the catastrophic mistake by the country's air defence forces, who mistook a passenger plane for a hostile military jet.

Khamenei has confirmed that the cause of the incident and the findings of an investigation into it will be released in a transparent and honest manner once the meeting is over, the broadcaster added.
