According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), forces of the US-led coalition on Wednesday midnight attacked popular forces that were fighting Daesh terrorist organization and SDF forces between the villages of Khsham and al-Tabyia in Deir ez-Zor northeastern countryside.

As a result of the US-led coalition attacks, scores of people killed and many others injured, SANA reported on Thursday, describing the US move as an ‘aggression’.

Reuters has cited a US official as saying on condition of anonymity that over 100 pro-government forces were killed in the assault.

The US military in a statement confirmed late Wednesday it launched airstrikes on Syrian government-backed troops and claimed that it conducted the attack in retaliation to Syrian popular forces’ attack on SDF forces.

The US has around 2,000 military personnel in northern Syria supporting the SDF, which is an alliance of militias in northern and eastern Syria and largely dominated by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).

The statement said the coalition “conducted strikes against attacking forces to repel the act of aggression against partners engaged in the Global Coalition's defeat-Daesh mission.”

It also claimed that the US-led attack was “in self-defense”.
