Δεν θα ζητήσει τη σύμφωνη γνώμη του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας, αλλά θα ζητήσει την έγκριση του Κογκρέσου ο αμερικανός πρόεδρος Μπαράκ Ομπάμα, προκειμένου να προχωρήσει στην ανάληψη στρατιωτικής δράσης εναντίον της Συρίας. Ο Μπαράκ Ομπάμα σε διάγγελμα του στον αμερικανικό λαό που ολοκληρώθηκε πριν από λίγο, ξεκαθάρισε ότι έχει αποφασίσει να χτυπήσει τη Συρία προκειμένου να δοθεί το μήνυμα ότι η χρήση χημικών όπλων πρέπει να αντιμετωπιστεί και διευκρίνισε ότι η επιχείρηση θα έχει περιορισμένο χαρακτήρα. Ανέφερε ακόμη ότι οι αμερικανικές ένοπλες δυνάμεις είναι έτοιμες να πλήξουν τη Συρία όποτε επιλέξει η αμερικανική κυβέρνηση.
«Η ασφάλεια και οι αξίες μας δεν επιτρέπουν τη χρήση χημικών» δήλωσε χαρακτηριστικά ο αμερικανός πρόεδρος. Ωστόσο σημείωσε ότι θα ζητήσει την έγκριση του κογκρέσου, κάτι που σημαίνει ότι απομακρύνεται χρονικά η στιγμή της επίθεσης, αφού όπως ανέφερε τα δύο σώματα του Κογκρέσου θα προγραμματίσουν μια έκτακτη συνεδρίαση και θα ψηφίσουν σχετικά, προκειμένου να δοθεί το «πράσινο φως» για την έναρξη της επιχείρησης.
Στο διάγγελμά του ο αμερικανός πρόεδρος τόνισε ότι είναι πεπεισμένος πως οι ΗΠΑ έχουν παρουσιάσει πειστικά στοιχεία, παρότι δεν ανέμειναν τα συμπεράσματα των ειδικών του ΟΗΕ στα χημικά όπλα. Διευκρίνισε ότι πιστεύει πως έχει την δυνατότητα να προχωρήσει στην ανάληψη στρατιωτικής δράσης και χωρίς την έγκριση του Κογκρέσου, αλλά θέλει να διεξαχθεί συζήτηση για αυτό στο αμερικανικό κοινοβούλιο, το οποίο κάλεσε να αποφασίσει με βάση την εθνική ασφάλεια των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών.
Ο Ομπάμα σημείωσε ότι σέβεται την άποψη όσων ζητούν να υπάρξει μια επιφυλακτική προσέγγιση στη Συρία, αλλά πιστεύει πως οι ΗΠΑ πρέπει να αναγνωρίσουν το κόστος που θα είχε το να παραμείνουν άπρακτες. «Εάν δεν υπάρξει απάντηση στη χρήση χημικών όπλων», επέμεινε, «αυτό θα θέσει υπό αμφισβήτηση την αποφασιστικότητά της να αντισταθεί σε άλλους που παραβαίνουν τους διεθνείς κανόνες» είπε.
Τέλος ο πρόεδρος Ομπάμα είπε πως γνωρίζει ότι ο λαός των ΗΠΑ ανησυχεί για το ενδεχόμενο νέου πολέμου και τόνισε πως δεν θα στείλει χερσαία στρατεύματα για να συμμετάσχουν στον πόλεμο άλλων. Παρά ταύτα, είπε ότι η κυβέρνησή του δεν μπορεί και δεν πρέπει να αγνοήσει αυτό που συνέβη στην Δαμασκό.

ReplyDeleteEn las horas más críticas de su presidencia, cuando ha decidido lanzar un ataque en la región más explosiva del mundo, Barack Obama se juega su lugar en la historia como el incompetente que condujo a su país a otra guerra innecesaria o como el líder firme que se plantó ante la actuación salvaje de un tirano.
Tendrá primero que convencer a un Congreso hostil y una opinión pública escéptica. Pero, frente a aquellos que este sábado se manifestaban en las puertas de la Casa Blanca con pancartas para que EE UU no ponga sus manos en Siria, el presidente que ganó las elecciones con la promesa de paz tiene ahora que defender la necesidad de la guerra.
Obama se ha visto ante la responsabilidad de acatar el veredicto de silencio de la ONU y quedarse quieto o actuar fuera de la única legalidad internacional que se conoce. El dilema es desgarrador. Como decía el viernes el secretario de Estado, John Kerry, al presentar las pruebas que, según él, vinculan al régimen de Bachar el Asad con el ataque químico, “todo el mundo advierte de los peligros de una intervención, pero ¿alguien ha pensado en el peligro de no hacer nada?”.
Un ataque a Siria, pese a que Obama ha prometido que será de carácter “limitado”, es decir, corto y sobre objetivos muy concretos, engendra un alto riesgo de propagación del conflicto en la zona y en la propia Siria, con la posibilidad de que EE UU se vea obligado a otros y más prolongados ataques en una espiral infernal.
Pero no hacer nada supone, desde la perspectiva de Washington, no sólo sancionar el uso de armas químicas en Siria, sino enviar a Irán, Corea del Norte o cualquier otro país que quiera escucharlo el mensaje de que no existen límites en el grado de crueldad que el mundo está dispuesto a soportar de forma impasible. Es cierto que ya han muerto más de 100.000 personas desde que la guerra civil en Siria estalló hace más de dos años, y que un millar más de cadáveres, por mucho que las armas con las que murieron fueran químicas, no parece cambiar mucho el balance de la tragedia. Pero Obama lo ha planteado como una cuestión de límites. EE UU no puede intervenir en todos los conflictos ni impedir todas las catástrofes humanas, pero el uso de armas de destrucción masiva constituye una línea roja que el propio Obama marcó en su día y que El Asad han traspasado groseramente ahora, según los datos que exhibe la Administración.
Este momento es particularmente angustioso para Obama, que construyó su leyenda sobre las cenizas de un predecesor arrogante y belicista. También es especialmente desconcertante para el resto del mundo ver al frente de esta nueva aventura militar al hombre en quien se creyó para construir la paz.
El propio Obama admitió el viernes que “mucha gente, entre la que me encuentro, está harta de guerra”, teniendo en cuenta las experiencias de Afganistán y de Irak. Pero añadió que también “hay mucha gente que dice que hay que hacer algo y luego nadie hace nada”. “Es importante tener en cuenta que, cuando más de 1.000 personas son asesinadas, incluyendo centenares de niños inocentes, por el uso de armas químicas, de las que el 98% o el 99% de la humanidad cree que no deberían utilizarse, si no hay una respuesta estamos enviando una señal que pone en peligro nuestra seguridad nacional”.

Kerry: Sarin Was Used in Syria Chemical Attack...
ReplyDeleteSarin was the gas used in the 21 August chemical attack in Syria, stated US Secretary of State John Kerry Sunday.
Kerry reiterated the US's position that it has conclusive evidence that the chemical weapons were employed by forces of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.
The US State Secretary added that American intelligence authorities have "proven" that the gas used was sarin, which is classified by the UN as a weapon of mass destruction.
According to Kerry, US authorities received samples of blood and hair of casualties of the attack from emergency teams who arrived on the spot.
The US has pledged to act out with a tailored military intervention to prevent the further use of chemical weapons, but President Barack Obama has said he will consult Congress first.

Lors d'une rencontre avec des responsables iraniens, le président syrien Bachar Al-Assad a déclaré, dimanche 1er septembre que son pays "est capable de faire face à toute agression extérieure". La veille, Barack Obama a annoncé une future attaque militaire menée contre la Syrie, suspendue pour l'heure à la décision du Congrès américain. Bachar Al-Assad a affirmé de son côté que "la Syrie, grâce à la résistance de son peuple et de son armée, continue d'accumuler les victoires jusqu'au retour de la sécurité et de la stabilité dans le pays", dans un extrait retransmis par la télévision d'Etat.
"Les menaces américaines de lancement d'une attaque contre la Syrie ne détourneront pas la Syrie de ses principes (...) ni de son combat contre le terrorisme soutenu par certains pays occidentaux et de la région, d'abord et avant tout par les Etats-Unis d'Amérique", a ajouté le leader syrien.
Quelques heures plus tôt, les autorités syriennes ont appelé le Congrès américain à "montrer sa sagesse" en bloquant des frappes sur le territoire syrien, avant de qualifier le président Barack Obama d'"hésitant et confus". Damas a d'autre part accusé Paris, qui était monté en première ligne avec Washington pour des frappes aériennes contre des cibles du régime syrien, d'être "irresponsable" et de "soutenir" Al-Qaïda.

“This case is going to build stronger and stronger,” he said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” But he also said he thinks “the people of America should be celebrating that the president is not acting unilaterally.”
He added that federal officials had used hair and blood samples provided by first responders to determine the nature of the attack, which killed hundreds. He said the information only came to his attention in the last 24 hours.
Kerry said he was confident that Congress would give Obama its backing for a military strike against Syria. But the former senator also says the president has authority to act on his own if Congress doesn’t give its approval.
“The case hasn’t changed and the case doesn’t change at all. The rationale for a military response is as powerful today” as it has been, Kerry said.

Saudi Arabia says it backs US strikes if Syrian people do..
ReplyDeleteCAIRO - Saudi Arabia said on Sunday it was time for the world to do everything it could to prevent aggression against the Syrian people, and that it would back a US strike on Syria if the Syrian people did.
Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal made his comments as the United States prepares strikes against the Syrian government, blaming it for a chemical gas attack that killed hundreds of civilians.
"We call upon the international community with all its power to stop this aggression against the Syrian people," Faisal said in Cairo, where he was attending a meeting of Arab League foreign ministers to discuss Syria.
On the prospect of a US strike, he said: "We stand by the will of the Syrian people. They know best their interests, so whatever they accept, we accept, and whatever they refuse, we refuse." The meeting was expected formally to blame Assad for the gas attack.

UN: No timeline on analysis of Syria gas attack samples...

The United Nations will not specify a timeline for when the analysis of findings from a gas attack that killed nearly 1,500 people in Syria last week will be finalized, the UN press office has said.
UN Spokesperson Martin Nesirky said at a Sunday press briefing that gas attack samples collected in Syria by the UN investigation team would begin to be transferred to laboratories on Monday. The findings were to be handled in compliance with the strictest scientific standards, he added.
Nesirky stressed that the UN is "uniquely capable" of establishing "impartial" and "credible" evidence of chemical weapons use in Syria.
He said the UN team that operated in the country for four days was able to access all areas it wanted and carry out all fact-finding efforts it considered necessary.
Dr. Ake Sellstrom, who heads the UN team, briefed UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon over a phone call earlier on Sunday. The team's members are currently in The Hague, Netherlands.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons based in The Hague says examination of evidence could take up to three weeks.

Russia may send lawmakers to US to discuss Syria...
ReplyDeleteMOSCOW: The Russian news agency Interfax says President Vladimir Putin hopes to send a delegation of lawmakers to the US to discuss the situation in Syria with members of Congress.
Russian legislators Valentina Matvienko and Sergei Naryshkin proposed that to Putin today, saying polls have shown little support among Americans for armed intervention in Syria to punish its regime for an alleged chemical weapons attack.
The lawmakers said maybe US legislators can be persuaded to take a "balanced stance" on the issue. Putin supported the initiative, which would require formal approval by the Foreign Ministry.
Russia has been a stalwart ally of Syria's Bashar Assad, and Putin spoke out on Saturday against the prospect of U.S. military intervention in Syria, calling such a move "foolish nonsense" that "defies all logic."

France accuses Syria of 3 chemical attacks, Assad slams Western logic...
ReplyDeleteAt least three chemical attacks were staged in Syria between April and August, a declassified French intelligence report claims, while President Bashar Assad said it was “illogical” for the government to launch a chemical weapons strike.
The declassified nine-page French intelligence report, issued by the country’s external and military services, suggests government forces loyal to President Assad were behind the attack, which took place on August 21 in eastern Ghouta, on the outskirts of Damascus.
The report alleges the strikes were directed from government-controlled areas to the east and west of Damascus and targeted rebel zones; the intelligence also describes "massive use of chemical agents" involved in the attack.
“Unlike previous attacks that used small amounts of chemicals and were aimed at terrorizing people, this attack was tactical and aimed at regaining territory," government sources commented to Reuters.
The source added that since then Assad’s forces had subsequently bombed the areas to erase evidence of strikes.
Moreover, the report alleges the Syrian government staged at least three chemical attacks since April, according to AFP, including those in the towns of Saraqib and Jobar in April. Those attacks appeared to have killed about 280 people.
The report was published on the websites of the French presidency, the Foreign Ministry and the Defense Ministry at 5 pm Paris time (7 pm GMT).

ReplyDeleteSyriens Präsident Assad hat in einem Interview geleugnet, Giftgas eingesetzt zu haben. Der Vorwurf sei unlogisch. Die USA und Frankreich hätten dafür keine Beweise.
Der syrische Präsident Baschar al-Assad hat sich gegen die Anschuldigungen gewehrt, seine Armee habe am 21. August Giftgas gegen Rebellen eingesetzt. Ob die syrische Armee überhaupt Massenvernichtungswaffen habe oder nicht, dazu wollte sich Assad in einem Interview mit der französischen Tageszeitung Le Figaro nicht äußern.
Auf die Frage, ob er nachweisen könne, dass die Regierungstruppen keine Chemiewaffen eingesetzt hätten, antwortete Assad mit einer Gegenfrage: "Nehmen wir an, dass unsere Armee Massenvernichtungswaffen benutzen möchte: Wäre es möglich, dass sie die Waffen in einer Zone einsetzt, in der sie sich selber befindet und in der Soldaten von den Waffen verletzt werden, wie es die Inspekteure der Vereinten Nationen bei ihrem Besuch in einem Krankenhaus festgestellt haben? Wo ist da die Logik?"
Vergangene Woche waren Inspektoren der UN in einem Militärkrankenhaus in Damaskus, in dem Soldaten lagen, die staatlichen Medien zufolge dem Giftgas ausgesetzt gewesen sein sollen. Der Bericht der Inspektoren darüber steht jedoch noch aus. Former UN head against military solution to Syrian conflict...
ReplyDeleteSTOCKHOLM, September 3 (Itar-Tass) - Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan opposes a military solution to the Syrian conflict. He made this statement delivering a lecture at Uppsala University on Monday evening.
According to Annan, the international community must stop the bloodshed, in order “to reach a political agreement and free the Syrians from the terror in which they live.” The politician believes that the international community had a chance to stop the civil war in Syria last summer. “Instead, the leaders began to quarrel and blame each other,” he stressed.
“Today, there is a debate that is necessary to punish those who had used chemical weapons in Syria. This is unacceptable and cruel. We need to deal with all those responsible,” Annan stated.

ReplyDeleteMOSCOW, September 3 (Itar-Tass) - The detection devices of the Russian missile attack warning system fixed the launch of two ballistic missiles in the Mediterranean Sea, Russian Defense Ministry reported on Tuesday.
“The launch of two ballistic missiles was fixed at 10:16am Moscow time on Tuesday by a combat unit of the missile attack warning system in Armavir,” the Defense Ministry noted.
"The flight trajectory of these bodies went through the central part of the Mediterranean towards Eatern part of the Mediterranean coastline," the source added.
NATO is already checking the information on ballistic missiles launch, according to NATO headquarters' spokesperson in Brussels.
Syrian embassy in Moscow, however, reported that there were neither air alerts nor explosions in Damascus.
Israeli military reported that they have no information on the launch. Italy's and French Defense Ministers issued similar statements.\
United Kingdom's Defense Ministry stated that they "were aware of the fact ballistic missiles were launched, but they have nothing to do with it."

"Пуск был обнаружен боевым расчетом отдельного радиотехнического узла СПРН в Армавире", - сообщил журналистам представитель Управления пресс-службы информации Минобороны РФ.
По его словам, "траектория полета данных целей проходила из центральной части Средиземного моря в направлении восточной части средиземноморского побережья".
"Об обнаружении запуска двух баллистических целей министр обороны России генерал армии Сергей Шойгу доложил президенту РФ, верховному главнокомандующему Вооруженными силами Владимиру Путину", - сказал представитель Минобороны.

Ранее днем западные информационные агентства со ссылкой на министерство обороны Израиля сообщили о том, что израильские военные запустили две ракеты в рамках совместных испытаний с американскими коллегами. ВМС США, в свою очередь, уведомило, что никаких запусков ракет с борта американских кораблей в регионе не производилось.

Об обнаружении запуска ракет в Средиземном море первым сообщило Министерство обороны России. Средства обнаружения российской Системы предупреждения о ракетном нападении /СПРН/ в 10:16 мск зафиксировалистарт двух баллистических целей в акватории Средиземного моря. Пуск был обнаружен боевым расчетом отдельного радиотехнического узла СПРН в Армавире. По словам представителя пресс-службы российского министерства, "траектория полета данных целей проходила из центральной части Средиземного моря в направлении восточной части средиземноморского побережья".
Как отметили израильские эксперты, ракета-мишень, скорее всего, была запущена над акваторией Средиземного моря с самолета израильских ВВС. В минобороны Израиля не уточняют метод пуска ракеты-цели. При отслеживании ракеты "Якорь" были задействованы расположенный в центральной части Израиля радар "Ора Надир" и система управления огнем "Золотой этрог", отметили в министерстве.
В то же время, по данным ливанского телеканала "Аль-Манар" /рупор шиитской группировки "Хезболлах"/, пробный запуск "Якоря" был произведен не с самолета, а с корабля ВМС Израиля.

«Le lancement, qui a eu lieu à 10h16 de Moscou (8h16 heure française), a été détecté par les stations radar à Armavir» (sud de la Russie), a indiqué le ministère de la Défense dans un communiqué cité par les agences russes. «Le ministre de la Défense Sergueï Choïgou a informé le président russe Vladimir Poutine, commandant en chef des armées», a ajouté le ministère de la Défense. Les engins ont été lancés «de la partie centrale de la Méditerranée vers la côte est», a indiqué le ministère sans autres précisions.
Un peu plus tard, le ministère israélien de la Défense a annoncé avoir mené «avec succès» dans la matinée un tir de missile radar dans le cadre d’un exercice militaire israélo-américain. «Le ministère de la Défense et la MDA (Missile Defence Agency) américaine ont lancé mardi matin à 9h15 un missile radar de type Ankor», a déclaré le ministère dans un communiqué.
Selon une source militaro-diplomatique russe citée par l’agence Interfax, il pouvait s’agir de tirs visant à «affiner les relevés météorologiques». «Il est possible que les destroyers de la 6e flotte de la Marine américaine aient tiré à blanc ou des leurres pour tester l’efficacité du système de la défense antimissile syrien», a indiqué une source à Moscou citée par l’agence Interfax. Ces tirs pourraient avoir pour but d'«intimider le peuple syrien et désorganiser la communauté internationale», a ajouté cette source.

Report: Syrian radar system did not detect missiles landing in Syria...

Russian radar detected the launch of two ballistic "objects" in the Mediterranean Sea on Tuesday but there was no sign of a missile strike on the Syrian capital Damascus, Russia's state-run RIA news agency said.

DeleteIsrael has announced that it carried out a test of an anti-missile system, shortly after Russia announced that its defence systems detected the launch of two missiles from the central part of the Mediterranean Sea towards the eastern coastline.
The Israeli army said it was "not familiar" with any missiles being fired in the Mediterranean, while saying that the missile that was tested - an Arrow 2 BMD system - is part of the Israel Hetz anti-missile system, a joint US-Israeli project.
Israel Hetz is used for defence against ballistic-missile attacks while the Iron Dome system is for defence against low-altitude rocket attacks.
Israeli media reports said the missiles was directed from bases in the Mediterranean and in the centre of Israel at 9:15am (06:15 GMT), around the same time cited by Russian state-run news agency RIA.
The Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement quoted by RIA that the launches took place at 10:16am Moscow time (06:16 GMT) on Tuesday and were detected by an early-warning system in Armavir in southern Russia.
It said Sergei Shoigu, the Russian defence minister, had already reported to President Vladimir Putin about the event, which comes amid growing expectations of Western military action in Syria.
Al Jazeera's Paul Brennan, reporting from Jerusalem on Tuesday, said the acknowledgement by Israel was unusual.
"Its is highly unusual that Israel should be involved in this joint exercise, as it could draw Israel into the conflict," he said.

Turkey talks of possible role in Syria with United States...
ReplyDeleteTurkey has discussed several military options on Syria with the United States in preliminary talks, a Turkish diplomat said today, after a report claimed that Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey had offered Washington the use of their military assets for possible intervention.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said in a phone call to Democratic lawmakers that those were the first three countries to make such offers, and other countries were expected to do so in the coming days as well, according to two people who were on the call, a CNN report said.
Approached by the Hürriyet Daily News, however, a Turkish diplomat dismissed the suggestion that Turkey had offered specific military assets, saying that in the talks several military options had been discussed involving Turkey. “In an action in which NATO would also participate, the possible role Turkey could play and what contributions it could make was discussed,” the diplomat said.
CNN reported that two senior Arab diplomats had said talks with Saudi Arabia and the UAE were preliminary, and no details had been discussed.
When Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said collateral damage from a strike was expected to be low, some lawmakers reportedly questioned how officials could know that.
But two leading Republican senators who met with President Barack Obama on Sept. 2 said the administration signaled increased support for Syria’s opposition, in a bid to shift the balance of power in the civil war.
“There seems to be emerging from this administration a pretty solid plan to upgrade the opposition,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, according to CNN’s report.
Sen. John McCain said he was more supportive of a limited U.S. strike after the meeting, partly because of the prospect of that increased support. However, both senators reportedly also said they needed more detailed assurances that the U.S. strategy would be sufficiently strong and sustainable before they could endorse it to their colleagues.

Among other provisions, the draft, which was obtained by Al Jazeera on Tuesday, sets a 60-day limit on military action in Syria, with a possibility for a single 30-day extension subject to conditions.
The deal reached by Senator Robert Menendez, the Democratic chairman of the panel, and Senator Bob Corker, the top Republican, includes a provision banning any use of US armed forces on the ground.

Russia warns of catastrophe if Syria reactor hit by US strike...
ReplyDeleteST PETERSBURG - Russia said on Wednesday that a military strike on Syria could have catastrophic effects if a missile hit a small reactor near Damascus that contains radioactive uranium.
The Foreign Ministry called on the UN nuclear agency to urgently assess the risk as the United States considers military action to punish Syria's government for an alleged gas attack.
"If a warhead, by design or by chance, were to hit the Miniature Neutron Source Reactor (MNSR) near Damascus, the consequences could be catastrophic," a ministry statement said.
It said nearby areas could be contaminated by highly enriched uranium and that it would be impossible to account for the nuclear material after such a strike, suggesting it could fall into the hands of people who might use it as a weapon.
Russia urged the UN International Atomic Energy Agency secretariat to "react swiftly" and present IAEA members "an analysis of the risks linked to possible American strikes on the MNSR and other facilities in Syria".
Nuclear expert Mark Hibbs, of the Carnegie Endowment think-tank, said the MNSR was a very small reactor and there would not be a lot of nuclear material there.
But he said there could be "a serious local radiation hazard" if there was irradiated nuclear material in the reactor and it was dispersed by a weapon strike.

Kerry Lands in Europe, Seeks Support on Syria Attack...
ReplyDeleteUS Secretary of State John Kerry on Saturday sought to muster European Union support for military strikes against Syria, after a G20 summit failed to resolve bitter international divisions on the issue.
Kerry went into informal talks with the EU's 28 foreign ministers in Lithuania with the bloc itself sharply split on Syria and most nations highly reticent over military action.
EU diplomats reported intense negotiations taking place to seek a consensus on Syria with France and Denmark supportive of a US-led strike but Germany, Sweden and others refusing to endorse action without a UN mandate or a debate within a UN framework.
The talks take place after US President Barack Obama and Russian leader Vladimir Putin failed to bridge their differences at the G20 summit of top global powers in Saint Petersburg.
The world is still waiting for a much-anticipated report by United Nations inspectors on the deadly August 21 attacks that left hundreds dead.
Later Saturday, Kerry is due to fly to Paris for talks with French officials. He will meet Arab League leaders there on Sunday to update them on Syria and on progress in the Zionist-Palestinian peace process.
He will travel on to London for talks late Sunday with Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, before flying home Monday.
Pope Francis has appealed for a peaceful solution to the crisis, calling on the world to unite on Saturday in a day of fasting and prayer for Syria. He will lead the way with a five-hour vigil in St Peter's Square.

EU's Ashton says evidence points to Syria government being behind chemical attack...
Delete(Reuters) - The European Union's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said on Saturday the EU's 28 nations agreed that available information seemed to show strong evidence that the Syrian government carried out a chemical attack on civilians in August.
"(The government) is the only one that possesses chemical weapons agents and the means of their delivery in a sufficient quantity," Ashton told reporters after meeting EU foreign ministers in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius
The ministers agreed, she said, that the world "cannot remain idle" and said a clear and strong response was needed to prevent any future use of chemical weapons in Syria.
But they stopped short of lending support to military action proposed by the United States and France. Washington says the August 21 attack killed more than 1,400 people.
Ashton said EU ministers welcomed French President Francois Hollande's commitment to wait for a report by United Nations inspectors on the incident before taking any action.
"The EU underscores...the need to move forward with addressing the Syrian crisis through the U.N. process," she said.

Syrian chemical weapons attack a war crime, says EU...

The European Union has called a chemical weapons attack in Damascus a crime against humanity and says it was probably carried out by the Syrian government.
Following a meeting with the US secretary of state, John Kerry, EU foreign ministers said that any punitive military attack should not be carried out until the delivery of a report by United Nations inspectors.
Catherine Ashton, the EU's representative for foreign affairs issued a statement on Saturday calling the chemical attack a "blatant violation of international law, a war crime and a crime against humanity".

La situation en Syrie a atteint sa "phase critique" le 21 août, lorsque les médias ont fait état d'une attaque chimique présumée menée par les autorités syriennes dans une banlieue de Damas. Le régime d'Assad ayant, selon l'administration américaine, "franchi la ligne rouge" pointée par Washington durant l'été 2012, Barack Obama espère obtenir le feu vert du Congrès US afin de lancer une opération militaire pour sanctionner l'usage d'armes chimiques par le régime syrien et le dissuader de recommencer.

Αμερικανική βοήθεια περιμένουν οι αντάρτες στη Συρία...
ReplyDeleteΤις παραδόσεις όπλων που είχαν υποσχεθεί οι Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες εξακολουθεί να αναμένει ο Ελεύθερος Συριακός Στρατός, όπως δηλώνει ο ηγέτης της ομάδας των ανταρτών.
Ο στρατηγός Σαλίμ Ιντρίς δήλωσε μέσω αμερικανικού ραδιοφωνικού σταθμού ότι οι μαχητές έχουν λάβει μέχρι στιγμής ανθρωπιστική βοήθεια, συμπεριλαμβανομένων τροφίμων και ιατρικών εφοδίων, καθώς και στρατιωτικό εξοπλισμό, όπως αλεξίσφαιρα γιλέκα, κιάλια νυχτερινής όρασης, εξοπλισμό επικοινωνιών και υπολογιστές, αλλά «όχι άμεση στρατιωτική υποστήριξη».
«Ακόμα περιμένουμε την παράδοση όπλων και πυρομαχικών. Και είπαμε στους φίλους μας στις ΗΠΑ ότι ευελπιστούμε στην υποστήριξή τους», δήλωσε ο Ίντρις σε δημόσιο ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό και συμπλήρωσε ότι οι επιτακτικές ανάγκες των μαχητών είναι αντιαρματικές ρουκέτες και αντιαεροπορικοί πύραυλοι.
Όπως δήλωσε ο Ίντρις, οι ΗΠΑ ανακοίνωσαν ότι η αποστολή αντιαεροπορικών πυραύλων είναι πολύ δύσκολο να επιτευχθεί, ωστόσο υποσχέθηκαν ότι θα δώσουν μια πιο πλήρης απάντηση αφού ολοκληρωθούν οι σχετικές διαβουλεύσεις με την Ουάσινγκτον, αναφέρει το Reuters.
Την ίδια ώρα, πολλοί βουλευτές των ΗΠΑ έχουν εκφράσει τις ανησυχίες τους ότι τα όπλα θα μπορούσαν να πέσουν στα χέρια μαχητών της Τζιχάντ.

"Je pense que ce n'est pas vrai de penser que nous étions dans une position, avec quelques frappes ciblées, d'empêcher ce que nous voyons en Syrie", a-t-il déclaré à la chaîne américaine CBS dans une interview enregistrée à Rome, juste avant son départ pour l'Arabie saoudite. "Ce n'est pas que ça ne valait pas le coup, mais après une décennie de guerre les Etats-Unis ont leur limites", a-t-il ajouté. "Nos troupes qui se sont relayées, leurs familles, le coût que cela représente et la capacité de parvenir à une solution viable sans que nous ayons à nous engager pour peut-être une autre décennie" ont fait que les Etats-Unis n'ont pas voulu aller plus avant, a-t-il encore noté. "Et il n'est pas clair en fait que l'issue aurait été significativement meilleure" avec une intervention militaire américaine, a-t-il repris. Quelques heures plus tard, à son arrivée en Arabie saoudite, M. Obama a tenté de dissiper les appréhensions du roi Abdallah au sujet de la politique américaine sur la Syrie et l'Iran en lui assurant que les intérêts stratégiques de leurs deux pays restaient "alignés". Depuis sa première visite en 2009 en Arabie, l'un des principaux alliés de Washington au Moyen-Orient, les relations entre les deux pays --qui remontent à sept décennies- ont connu des soubresauts, Ryad reprochant notamment à Washington son attitude non interventionniste en Syrie et son ouverture vers l'Iran. Le royaume, chef de file des monarchies du Golfe, redoute qu'un désengagement des Etats-Unis du Moyen-Orient et l'ouverture américaine sur l'Iran n'encouragent les ambitions régionales de son rival chiite. More than 40 nations join coalition to fight ISIS/ISIL.....
ReplyDeleteThe United States plans to broaden its offensive against the Islamic State militant in conjunction with building an international coalition, but President Barack Obama insists that these efforts will not include American boots on ground.
In an interview exclusive with NBC News, Obama said that he would announce the plan Wednesday in a televised address, underlining that the offensive will be launched with an international coalition.
The American president said that his administration has so far been focused on the problem of IS, assessed the situation on the ground, and ensured the security of American facilities in Iraq as well as other strategic structures such as the Mosul Dam.
"The next phase is now to start going on some offense," he said. "I will then meet with congressional leaders on Tuesday. On Wednesday, I'll make a speech and describe what our game plan's going to be going forward."

U.S. concerned Iranian ships may carry arms to Yemen...
ReplyDeleteThe United States is concerned a group of Iranian cargo ships may be carrying advanced weapons to Yemen, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Wednesday, as he called on Iran to avoid "fanning the flames" of the conflict with arms deliveries.
Asked whether he thought weapons were on board the Iranian ships, Carter said: "We’re certainly concerned about that.""And there's no reason for anybody to be delivering advanced weapons into a situation that’s already gotten way beyond what is reasonable there," he told a small group of reporters, shortly before landing in California. He did not elaborate.
