.......http://www.epikaira.gr/epikairo.php?id=60409&category_id=87

  10. Workers strike in support of Turkey protests....

Two-day strike under way to protest over government's harsh response to demonstrations that have swept the nation.....

Thousands of public sector workers in Turkey are on a two-day strike in support of anti-government demonstrations.

The strike was called by the The Public Workers Unions Confederation in response to "state terror implemented against mass protests across the country". It said the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had "shown once again ... enmity to democracy".

The confederation, which has an estimated 240,000 members in 11 unions, said the strike would last for two days.

Al Jazeera's Rawya Rageh reporting from the capital Ankara said that the strike call was significant: "They are trying to send a message, that this is not just youth on the streets, this is not just about a park or individual demands - this is about something bigger."

However, she said that the success of the strike remained to be seen: "It has to be said that unions are not that strong in Turkey. This is going to be a test to show that they are able to deliver on what they say."

White House welcomed Arinc's comments apologizing for excessive force
Washington (AA) - The White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said they welcomed the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc's comments apologizing for excessive force by police on protesters in the Gezi Park demonstrations in Istanbul.

In a daily press briefing at the White House on Tuesday, Carney said US administration hoped that the Turkish government would handle the Gezi Park protests "in a way that respects the rights of free speech and assembly, that are elemental to democracies."

"We have made clear our concerns about the excessive use of force that has been reported and have called on all sides to refrain from provoking violence. And we noted, obviously, the comments by the deputy prime minister," Carney said, noting that the US had a very important relationship with Turkey.

"Turkey is a NATO ally. We are working with Turkey on a range of regional issues that are obviously of great importance to US national security and to regional security, and we will continue to do that," he said.

On the other hand, spokesperson for the United States Department of State, Jennifer Psaki, said "we welcome the efforts by President (Abdullah) Gul and others to calm the situation. We're hopeful that that will have an impact on the country and think that's a positive step."

Psaki said that a call was scheduled by US Secretary of State John Kerry with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu for today and the two talked about a range of issues, including Syria, where "they work very closely together and his concerns about police actions in Turkey."

  16. Third person killed in Turkey protests....

Ethem Sarısülük, a Turkish activist who was wounded in the head during Taksim Gezi Park clashes in the capital city of Ankara, has succumbed to his injuries, a representative of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) said during a press meeting in Ankara today.

Sarısülük, whose brain death was declared earlier, became the third person killed in protests, the representative said after a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç.

Two other people have so far died in the protests. Abdullah Cömert, a 22-year-old youth branch member of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), was killed in Antakya on June 3 during the clashes, while 20-year-old Mehmet Ayvalıtaş was hit and killed after a car driver ignored warnings to stop for protesters in Ümraniye’s 1 Mayıs neighborhood on the night of June 2.

  17. Police quell protesters in Ankara with sudden tear gas attack .....

The ninth day of the Gezi Park protests saw more police violence in the center of Ankara in the afternoon, despite the government’s repeated instructions to the security forces to exercise restraint. Police again used tear gas and water cannon to quell protesters, most of whom were members of unions who had called for a strike in solidarity with the Gezi Park demonstrations.

The Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions (DİSK), the Public Workers Unions Confederation (KESK), the Turkish Doctors’ Union (TTB) and the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB) as well as members of left-wing political parties and members of civil society organizations were all present at the Kızılay square.

A greater police presence compared to the last two days was noted near the square. Tensions arose as a group unrelated with the unions tried to set up tents on Kızılay Square, according to claims. Police chased protesters in the main arterial roads of the town such as Sakarya, Ziya Gökalp and Atatürk Avenues. Some detentions have reportedly been made following the sudden crackdown.

Ankara was one of the places which saw the fiercest police repression over the week-end. Another demonstration is underway at Kuğulu Park, one of the main parks in the center of the city.

  18. ‘PM who takes things personally’: Erdogan to demolish park despite protests...

Turkey’s PM has vowed that development of Taksim Square will go ahead, despite ongoing protests. Tayyip Erdogan made the remark in Tunisia, and is due to return to Turkey today. Erdogan is also under scrutiny, with opponents blasting him as authoritarian.

As the protests enter their seventh day, casualties have risen, with three people dead and more than 4,000 injured. What began as an environmental protest against the demolition of Taksim Gezi Park in Istanbul to build a mall has turned into Turkey’s biggest wave of anti-government protest in years.

"There is a problem called Twitter right now and you can find every kind of lie there. The thing that is called social media is the biggest trouble for society right now," Erdogan said before leaving for North Africa. The Turkish prime minister also slammed the protests as undemocratic, and dismissed them as being organized by extremists.

In their list of demands issued to Erdogan, activists are calling for the firing of the chiefs responsible for the violent police crackdown, the release of protesters detained by police, and for a ban on the use of teargas.

Police have deployed tear gas and water cannons to quell more than 10,000 protesters that gathered in downtown Ankara. This comes as officials claim the protests are under control and the process is "becoming normalized and in line with common sense."

The rally in the Turkish capital started peacefully in the early hours of the morning, reports the Hurriyet Daily. As the protesters arrived at the Kizilay Square in late afternoon, police there made calls to disperse in order to not block car traffic.

The police then started "a sudden and unexpected intervention" as the protesters ran to the narrow streets surrounding the square.

According to witness reports on twitter police were targeting and detaining “random” youth in the crowd. Police reportedly made at least three arrests.

  31. Turkey protests: Riot police enter Taksim Square.....

Turkish riot police have entered Istanbul's Taksim Square, where anti-government protesters have been staging demonstrations for close to two weeks.

Hundreds of officers have been using tear gas and water cannon to disperse activists.

The move comes after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to meet the protest organisers on Wednesday.

The unrest was sparked by a police crackdown on a local protest over an Istanbul park.

The protests then widened, with demonstrators accusing Mr Erdogan's government of becoming increasingly authoritarian and trying to impose conservative Islamic values on a secular state.

Backed by armoured vehicles, police wearing helmets and carrying shields gathered around the square early on Tuesday.

They then began to move past barricades erected by protesters.

The BBC's Mark Lowen, who is in the square, says it is a deliberate show of force.

The demonstrations are now in their 12th day, with activists controlling much of Taksim Square.

The unrest was sparked after police moved to suppress environmental protests over the redevelopment of Gezi Park, which is part of Taksim Square, on 31 May.

More than 5,000 people have been injured and three people have died since the protests began.

  32. Turkish police use water cannons, tear gas to oust protesters from Taksim Square.....

Turkey has deployed riot police at Taksim Square in Istanbul, the focus of the ongoing anti-government protest in the country.

Hundreds of security troops have arrived at the scene early morning. The square itself was mostly empty of protesters at the time.

The few protesters present at the square when police arrived were quickly dispersed with tear gas, eyewitnesses report. They retreated to neighboring areas and are launching sporadic assaults at police forces, being beaten back each time.

Some of the police dismantled barricades which protesters erected over the days of action. They have also taken down protest banners from the buildings surrounding the square.

Others were using water cannons to scatter the protesters trying to retake the square. The activists threw firebombs and fireworks at the armored police trucks.

Police officials told the media they are taking control of the square to protect a monument in it from vandalism. .........http://rt.com/news/police-turkey-taksim-square-505/

(CNN) -- Turkey is no Egypt and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan no Hosni Mubarak. This is not a "Turkish Spring," but a message to an elected leader to reign in his hubris and his divisive politics.

These are some of the central messages, which both Turkish commentators (ourselves included), and the international media have brought across.

Erdogan still has a choice, as the Financial Times reminds us, between rising to the highs of statesmanship of former French President Charles de Gaulle or spending his remaining political life as a Turkish likeness of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has raised the possibility of bringing the issue of the demolition of Gezi Park to a referendum, said ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) Spokesperson Hüseyin Çelik June 12.

Çelik said in a press conference following a meeting between Erdoğan and a group of 11 people representing the protesters, that the government would look into the issue of organizing a referendum in Istanbul.

“The prime minister said that since we want to know what the people think, we can bring the option of a referendum to the concerned bodies. With a decision from the AKP’s Central Executive Committee, the necessary step could be undertaken,” Çelik said during the press conference.

He added that the referendum would only be on the reconversion of the iconic park to the replica of the historic Artillery Barracks, a flagship venue that was announced by the prime minister among its “crazy projects” for Istanbul. It was initially said that the building would comprise a shopping center, which sparked an outcry among citizens who opposed the demolition of Istanbul’s green lung at the heart of its entertainment area.

ANKARA (AA) - A referendum can be held in Istanbul over the project to replace Taksim Gezi Park with a replica Ottoman-era barracks, said Deputy Chairman of Turkey's ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party Huseyin Celik following Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's meeting with a group of 11 people representing the protestors.

"We will respect the results of the referendum and do what the people decide in Istanbul," said Celik.

Celik said the representatives, including academics, students and architects, expresssed environmental concerns and voiced their demands to Erdogan.

The representatives called on Erdogan to embrace the youth and understand them, said Celik adding "We are doing politics with our people."

Celik said an investigation was launched into the use of excessive force and they would bring those responsible to account.

Celik called on the protestors to leave the park saying "Lets's disperse so the life will turn to normal".

Celik also said shop owners and hotels were badly affected by the protests and the image of the country was damaged.

The government will not let banners be hung on Ataturk Culture Center (AKM) in Taksim Square any more said Celik, adding "AKM is a very gloomy building and does not befit its name. It is not earthquake resistant either. It could be replaced with a more beautiful building."

"These protests show that there is no dictatorship in Turkey," said Celik. "If the environmental demonstrators end the protests while provacateurs continue to occupy the park they will face police intervention."

  39. Ashton urged Turkey to find and judge perpetrators through well-conducted investigation.....

MADRID (AA) - European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said on Thursday "It's time to cooperate with Turkey, not leaving it alone," regarding the ongoing international row over Taksim Gezi Park incidents in Turkey.

Ashton gave a keynote speech at the conference "Forum Europa" organized by Nueva Economia Forum, following her meeting with the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy Brey and Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation José Manuel Garcia in the Spanish capital Madrid, where she holds official talks.

As she answered questions on Taksim Gezi Park protests in Turkey and the ongoing claims and disputes both in Turkey and in the international area, Ashton called on the international community to help Turkey handle the situation.

Stressing that the EU sides with human rights, freedom of expression and demonstration, Ashton urged Turkey to fulfil its obligations to find and judge the perpetrators through a well-conducted investigation.

"I made a phone conversation with the Turkish foreign minister and told him that the police's handling of Taksim protests worries me. The images of police using tear gas and displaying inappropriate manners towards protesters are really uneasy. We know there are several people wounded, some blinded and three deaths. However most of the protests were peaceful," she stated.

She underlined that Turkey should remain as a part of the EU , saying "We must continue our dialogue with Turkey particularly on issues regarding law state and human rights. It's time to cooperate with Turkey, not leaving it alone."

Ashton pointed out their utmost efforts as the EU for contributing to the peace process in the Middle East, reminding her upcoming visit to Israel to have talks with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in this context.

Touching upon the civil war in Syria, Ashton noted that the EU is working towards a political solution in Syria.

She also expressed her appreciation of Arab women's and youth's growing social role, "Arab Spring has shifted the world dynamics, bringing hope to the region. There will certainly be a political solution in Syria. Geneva II Conference is of great importance at this phase."

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Garcia Margallo also highlighted the valid ground to EU's close cooperation with Turkey.-

  40. Turkish politicians slam foreign media coverage of the Gezi Park protests...

Turkish politicians, including President Abdullah Gül, reacted harshly to foreign media coverage of the ongoing Gezi protests, with state-run Anatolia news agency attempting to create a Twitter campaign over the ongoing London protests under the hashtag, “occupylondon.”

Anatolia news agency gave a detailed report of the events that have been occurring in London, highlighting the number of detainments, while posting the story under the “occupylondon” hashtag on Twitter. The hashtag was picked up quickly by ruling party supporters, with tweets exaggerating the ongoing events in London as users warned their friends and relatives in London to be careful.

The social campaign soon turned into response to the previous night’s coverage of the Gezi events by foreign media outlets, and the “occupylondon” hashtag became one the trending topics of the day.

Turkish President Gül too frowned upon the foreign media coverage of the events, criticizing the stories for attempting to draw a parallel between the Gezi protests and the events happening in the countries of the Middle East.

“You have to put what’s happening there, and what is happening in Turkey in separate ranks,” Gül said. “Especially foreign media outlets should be very careful about this.”

Several other social media attempts occurred following the nights events, with hashtags like “YouCANTstopTurkishSuccess” and “GoHomeLiarCNNbbcANDreuter” being used frequently by Turkish ministers, including Minister of EU Affairs Egement Bağış and Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç, who also tweeted, “My regards to the Anatolian kids who defend their country,” according to Anatolia news agency.

CNN International in particular was one of the most-watched outlets during the June 11 intervention, with CNN reporter Christiane Amanpour quickly becoming a social media topic when she ended her interview with interview with one of prime minister’s advisors, İbrahim Kalın by saying, “The show is over.”

    BRAZZAVILLE (AA)
    - Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said Thursday that international media falsified "the democratic reflex" of Turkish citizens and manipulated the international public opinion in reporting Gezi Park protests.

"Turkish people have all democratic rights to express their opinion. However, the anomalous situation is that international media and some international circles falsified the democratic reflex of Turkish citizens, and unfortunately they manipulated the international public opinion with unreal information," Bozdag said in a speech he delivered at the opening of the first term meeting of Turkey-Congo Joint Economic Commission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

  43. White House says expects Turkey to uphold democratic freedoms....

The White House on June 13 said Turkish authorities should uphold the freedoms of expression and assembly, and individuals should not be punished for exercising their rights amid a police crackdown on the protests sparked by the demolition attempt of Istanbul's Gezi Park.

"Turkey is a close friend and ally of the United States, and we expect the Turkish authorities to uphold these fundamental freedoms," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters.

Carney also said U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry had spoken with his counterpart Ahmet Davutoğlu, and that there had been other communication between the United States and Turkey about the protest at different levels.

But Carney did not comment on whether President Barack Obama had spoken directly with Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan about the protests.

The protests in Turkey are entering their 18th day as the government has launched talks with representatives of protesters, raising the possibility on a referendum to determine the faith of what has become an iconic park.

  46. Police intervene at Istanbul's Taksim Square, enter Gezi Park....

Police intervened once again in Istanbul's Taksim Square using tear gas and water cannons to quell the protesters an hour after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ultimatum to evacuate the Gezi Park before tomorrow.

Ambulances were seen entering the park following the intervention. Police have also entered the park for the first time after two weeks. Security forces took over the park, demolishing the tents of the protesters. Dozers worked to clear the remaining barricades around the park. Protesters had started a few hours earlier to remove the barricades standing at the entrance of te park following hours of dicussion on their next move. The police have also cordoned off the Taksim Square.

The İstiklal Street ascending the Taksim Square is filled with a large crowd. A separate group and police confronted in Harbiye side of the park.

Ambulances have also started picking injured people from Divan hotel at the Harbiye entrance of the park, which has been used by the protesters as a health center from the beginning of the protests. Protesters sang the national anthem in a bid to prevent police attack on the hotel.

The riot police stationed in front of the Atatürk Cultural Center made announcements before the intervention asking protesters to disperse from the park.

The protesters had earlier decided to stay at the park following the government’s assurance that it will comply with a court decision that suspends the redevelopment plans for the site.

The Taksim Solidarity Platform which launched the protests two weeks ago had also called for a mass meeting tomorrow at 4 p.m.

There was a vast crowd, including kids and elderly people in the park, only minutes before the police raid.

  50. Turkish media behaves sensitive on Gezi Park for national security, says EU minister...

Turkish European Affairs Minister and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis said, "After 9/11, the U.S. media, too, was very sensitive in reporting the events… Turkish media is sensitive because they don’t want to create tension within the country."

The Wall Street Journal interviewed Bagis about the Gezi Park events in Turkey.

Upon a question about European Parliament's (EP) recent resolution on Turkey, Bagis said, "The members of the European Parliament did not make such calls when there were much more severe examples of police brutality in their own countries… Because they all realized that their government was acting to protect people’s right to life and their property."

Bagis added that he welcomed Enlargement Commissioner's Stefan Fule and Vice President of the Union for foreign affairs Catherine Ashton’s calls on EP and member states to open the negotiation chapters 23 and 24, which would introduce reforms in the areas of human rights and regarding judiciary.

Against the calls of some politicians to freeze relations with Turkey, Bagis said, "That would create a very bad atmosphere here. Turkey would have to make its own assessment, and the reaction would be very harmful not only for Turkey but also to the interests of the members of the European Union."

    -EU's approach towards Turkey-

Criticizing EU's approach towards Turkey, Bagis said, "If the EU wants to help Turkey, it should open the two chapters, the 23th and the 24th, and motivate Turkey to conduct even more reforms… We’re in a situation where the EU is telling Turkey to do its homework, but not telling what the homework is."

    -International media’s coverage-

About international media’s coverage of the protests, Bagis said, "After 9/11, the U.S. media, too, was very sensitive in reporting the events… This is a national sensitivity issue. Turkish media is sensitive because they don’t want to create tension within the country."

He added, "I don’t think that CNN International did as much reporting on Boston marathon explosions, or on the demonstrations which ended with many more casualties throughout Europe, or even on what is happening in Syria today."

    -Criticisms towards PM Erdogan-

Responding to criticisms directed at Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan, Bagis said, "The Prime Minister’s style has not changed in the last twelve years. This is the style that gave him 35 percent of the votes in 2002, that increased the votes to 47 percent in 2007, and to 50 percent in 2011."

Bagis added, "This is not the first time Tayyip Erdogan is managing a crisis. And I am sure that the Prime Minister will come out of this crisis even stronger than before."

Participants at a discussion forum in Kadıköy's Yoğurtçu Park, a gathering that has repeatedly been held since the police closed access to Gezi Park, agreed to march in order to show their indignation at the court's ruling. The crowd walked holding banners in support of Sarısülük and condemning police's violence.

Hours earlier, the prosecutor in charge of the investigation into Sarısülük's killing ruled that the shooting was "within the limits of self-defense."

  63. Human Rights Body condemns police actions during Gezi protests....

The Human Rights Association (İHD) yesterday released a report on the police’s use of force and human rights violations during the Gezi Park demonstrations, proposing a list of suggestions including revisions of police armament and a ban on the use of arms on collective demonstrations.

The report particularly stressed that the use of tear gas should also be forbidden. The İHD report suggested abolishing the barriers preventing the freedom of expression, while demanding the release of the protesters who were detained on charges of involvement in terrorist activities.

According to the report, some 2.5 million people participated in countrywide protests starting from the tenth of last month, some 4,900 people were detained and 4,000 civilians in addition to 600 policemen were injured.

The reports stated that the incidents were the result of a reaction against the current government’s attempts to create an identity suggesting that the government should accelerate the process of forming a democratic Constitution rapidly, and declare that it would make a new Constitution based on fundamental rights.

70. Taksim shop owners break silence, call for end to protests...

The Turkish Union of Credit and Guarantee Cooperatives for Tradesmen and Craftsmen (TESKOMB), member businesses of which have experienced huge financial losses due to the anti-government Gezi protests, mainly in İstanbul's Taksim neighborhood, held a press conference in Taksim on Monday, calling for the protests to end.

The businesses in the area had previously suggested that the protests calm down, but this is the first time a union has spoken out about the interruptions to commercial life. The union represents a total of 1.5 million tradesmen and craftsmen.

Addressing the press, TESKOMB President Abdulkadir Akgül noted that the shop owners are not against the protesters but he underlined that “it is time to stop.” Akgül expressed that the real victims of the protests are businessmen, stating: “We remained calm as our businesses were physically attacked and our windows broken, but we are having a hard time understanding the reason behind the protests now because they are being held for many different reasons each day. These unreasonable demonstrations and outbursts have used up our patience.”.....http://www.todayszaman.com//news-321045-taksim-shop-owners-break-silence-call-for-end-to-protests.html

  72. Police seal off Gezi Park ahead of alternative iftar event...

Police forces once again blocked entry to Istanbul's Gezi Park on July 28, hours before an alternative iftar event planned by the Anti-Capitalist Muslims, a small religious group that has supported the Gezi protests from the beginning.

Peace and Democracy Party's (BDP) Istanbul deputies Sabahat Tuncel and Sırrı Süreyya Önder had also been expected to attend the event, part of the "traveling" iftar meals that are being organized in a different public space every day.

After evacuating the park, police started to cordon off Taksim Square in an attempt to restrict a group that had gathered at the entry of the park. At least three people have been detained, while some of the security officers sprayed tear gas at individuals who refused to leave the square, daily Hürriyet reported.

    'Political decision without legal justification'

Tuncel and independent deputy Levent Tüzel started a sit-in to protest the closure of the park. After being unable to convince the officers, they prepared a small dining table on the floor at the juncture between the pedestrian İstiklal Avenue and Taksim Square, despite being surrounded police officers.....http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/police-seal-off-gezi-park-ahead-of-alternative-iftar-event.aspx?pageID=238&nID=51592&NewsCatID=341

  74. Ruling AKP deputy report criticizes government handling of Gezi crisis...

Prime Minister Erdoğan was ‘misled’ about the Gezi Park protests, according to a report prepared by a research center chaired by a ruling party MP.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was misinformed during the Gezi Park protests and the redevelopment project was not handled in a democratic way, said a report prepared by the Eurasia Global Research Center (AGAM), chaired by İdris Bal, a Justice and Development Party (AKP) deputy.

The report, called “Taksim Incidents Analysis,” said a small-scale local issue turned into a big crisis and chaos since the prime minister was misguided and became the principal side of the dispute. Bal’s report defined the unrest’s beginning as a “strategic mistake.”

The Gezi Park protests started May 31 when the Metropolitan Municipality bulldozers attempted to demolish central Istanbul’s unique green area, Gezi Park. The Turkish police’s heavy-handed intervention caused the protests to spread to 79 of 81 provinces.

Four protesters were killed by police and some “anti-protest civilians,” and a police officer fell off a bridge during an intervention and died. More than 10 protesters have lost their sight, and nearly 7,000 protesters were injured in almost 40 days of unrest, according to the Turkish Medical Association’s toll.

This could have been avoided by early interventions by the local Beyoğlu Municipality or Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, and Erdoğan would be the actor to resolve the conflict.

The report said the Taksim incidents started with the environmentalist sensitivity of a small group, but the police’s intervention and the lack of dialogue caused the protests to transform to anger at first the prime minister and second at the government.

    Dialogue required .....http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/ruling-akp-deputy-report-criticizes-government-handling-of-gezi-crisis.aspx?pageID=238&nID=52419&NewsCatID=338

  75. Turkey violated rights 'on huge scale' during Gezi protests: Amnesty International report...

The Turkish authorities committed "gross human rights violations" during anti-government protests that rocked the country in June, Amnesty International said in a report released on Oct.2.

"The attempt to smash the Gezi Park protest movement involved a string of human rights violations on a huge scale," Andrew Gardner, the London-based watchdog's Turkey expert, said in a statement.

"They include the wholesale denial of the right to peaceful assembly and violations of the rights to life, liberty and the freedom from torture and ill-treatment," he added. What started as a relatively small environmentalist movement to save Istanbul's central Gezi Park from re-development evolved into a nationwide wave of protests against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The Turkish police's crackdown was often heavy-handed. Six people were killed and more than 8,000 injured during the protests, according to the Turkish doctors' union.

Amnesty -- detailing the use of live ammunition, tear gas, water cannon, plastic bullets and beatings -- said the deaths of at least three protesters were linked to the "abusive use of force by police." The police "routinely" fired directly at protesters, bystanders and sometimes into residential buildings and medical facilities, resulting in hundreds of injuries, according to witnesses interviewed by the rights group. The Amnesty website carried a video accompanying the report's release and entitled "When Turkey took torture to the streets".

The report said the wave of violence had harmed Turkey's ambition to become a democratic model for Muslim countries and "exposed a striking intolerance of opposing voices." The watchdog said there was still time for Turkey to comply with international laws and conventions in the unrest's aftermath, which has seen the regime take a tough line on protesters.

"The vast majority of police abuses already look likely to go unpunished, while many of those who organized and participated in the protests have been vilified, abused - and now face prosecution on unfair or inflated charges," the report said.

A Turkish police officer who sprayed pepper gas directly into the face of several protesters, including a woman in a red dress in what became one of the most iconic photos from last summer’s Gezi resistance, will face three years in prison, Doğan news agency reported Jan. 15.

Istanbul Public Prosecutor Adnan Çimen demanded up to three years in prison for F.Z., a 23-year-old police officer, who used tear gas against a group of peaceful protesters in Gezi Park on May 28, 2013, on charges that he abused his authority.

The prosecutor also demanded that F.Z. be dismissed from the profession in the indictment.
