Russian MoD accuses US of stirring up tensions in northern Syria with arms supplies

Russian MoD
The US is fuelling the crisis in northern Syria and the ongoing Turkish military operation against the Kurds through reckless weapon supplies to pro-American rebel groups, Russia's Defense Ministry has said.

“The Pentagon’s uncontrolled deliveries of modern weaponry to the pro-US militants in the north of Syria, including, according to our information, contributed to the rapid escalation of tensions and prompted the Turkish special operation,” the ministry said Saturday.

The “provocative actions” of Washington – the announcement of the creation of “border forces” and other activities aimed at the “disintegration of Syrian sovereignty, and supporting armed militant groups” have triggered an “extremely negative” reaction from Ankara, the ministry noted.

The ongoing Turkish military operation has prompted Russian forces, stationed in the region, to regroup and relocate military police units and Reconciliation Center operatives to the village of Tell-Adjar to the east of the city of Afrin. Russia continues to monitor the situation and is ready to provide help to civilians fleeing the combat zones, the ministry said in a separate statement.

  1. The Syrian government has condemned "Turkish aggression on Afrin" following the operation launched by Ankara. Kurdish YPG forces responded by saying they have "no choice but to resist."
The Syrian government also denied that Ankara informed Damascus of the operation, despite Turkish media reporting that such notification was forwarded "in writing," Syrian state media reported, citing an official source.

    1. Türkiye, Suriye’ye Zeytin Dalı harekatı hakkında nota verdi
Dışişleri Bakanlığı'nın İstanbul Temsilciliği vasıtasıyla Suriye’nin İstanbul Başkonsolosluğu'na Zeytin Dalı harekatı hakkında nota verdiği bildirildi.

  2. Syria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Turkey has infringed on the country's sovereignty...

"Syria resolutely condemns Turkish aggression on Afrin, which is an integral part of Syria's territory," the Foreign Ministry said.

  4. The Turkish Air Force attacked the Menagh Military Airbase in northwestern Syria, which the US used for supplying weapons to Kurdish armed forces, the Hurriyet newspaper reported citing military sources.

The newspaper noted that the airfield was among the 113 targets scheduled for the attack during Operation Olive Branch in Syria

  5. The Turkish military said the PYD is using civilians in Afrin as “human shield.”

The YPG is using children and women as shields, it said.

The Turkish intelligence has also reportedly confirmed that the YPG is trying to show the hit militants as civilians.

    1. “Thousands of pro-Turkey civilians have escaped the PKK/YPG-controlled areas in an attempt to reach Aleppo,” an official told Hürriyet Daily News.

“Our assessment is that they would like to use civilians as a human shield and blame potential civilian casualties on Turkey,”

The road to Aleppo has reportedly been shut following an agreement between YPG and the regime, the official said.

    2. The Minnigh military airbase occupied by terrorist group PYD/PKK in Afrin was among the targets hit by Turkish jets, they said, adding all injured and dead taken to the hospital belong to PYD/PKK terrorist group.

Meanwhile, civilians in Afrin got an opportunity to flee from the captivity of the PYD/PKK terrorists following Turkey’s air campaign. They fled towards Aleppo, the officials said.

However, PYD / PKK terrorists, in agreement with Bashar al-Assad regime forces, closed the road from Afrin to Aleppo in a bid to use civilians as human shield.

  6. Russian Defense Ministry said Saturday that the Pentagon took “provocative steps” by providing modern arms to the U.S.-backed groups in Syria.

In a statement, the Defense Ministry said Turkey launched Afrin operation due to the U.S. arming of the groups in Syria.

Turkey launched the Afrin operation due to Pentagon’s supply of modern weapons to US-led armed groups in Syria, the statement said and added that the United States’ irresponsible behavior in Syria threatens the peace process in the country as well as the Geneva process.

It also highlighted the “provocative steps” taken by the United States was the main factor contributing to the development of the crisis situation in the northwest Syria.

The U.S. created some Kurdish populated areas in Syria and tried to isolate these regions, according to the statement.
