4 police officers injured during raid on member of German far-right group

A member of a German far-right group injured four police officers on Wednesday when he opened fire during a raid, said the Bavarian interior minister.

Joachim Herrmann said one of the injured agents was in serious condition and had to have emergency surgery.

The assailant, 49, who has since been detained, carried out the attack in Georgensgmünd in the Bavarian region of Germany as special forces conducted a raid on his house.

The suspect was linked to the 'Reichsbürgerbewegung' (Citizens of the Reich movement), a group with neo-Nazi ties that denies the Holocaust and remains loyal to the defunct German Empire.

Herrmann said the group were dangerous extremists who do not recognize legislation, and are therefore under surveillance.

He said they were apparently willing to exert brutal violence over state representatives and preventative measures needed to be taken against them to protect the public.

The suspect had a hunting license and owned around 30 weapons, a number of which were seized by police during the raid.

He reportedly opened fire immediately without establishing any form of contact with the officers.

The incident came only two months after the forced eviction of another Reichsbürger in Reuden, eastern Germany, also led to a shoot-out that left two police officers and the perpetrator injured.

In that police raid, the suspect, 41, had locked himself in his residence with some 15 other members of the group who proceeded to throw stones and other objects at the police.

The 'Citizens of the Reich' group, with its far-right and sometimes sectarian tendencies, believes that the modern German Federation is illegitimate and instead considers that the rightful German territory extends to the lengths of its 1937 borders.
