Obama: must keep alive idea of a secure Israel alongside a Palestinian homeland

US President Barak Obama on Wednesday said that the idea of a secure Israel alongside a Palestinian state must 'be kept alive,' as he met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

 


In a press conference prior to the final meeting between the two leaders before Obama leaves office in January, the President said that "We need to keep alive the idea of Israel as a secure country alongside a Palestinian homeland.”

"It is important for America's national security to ensure that we have a safe and secure Israel-- one that can defend itself," the President continued, adding "the memorandum of understanding that we signed is indicative of that. What it does is provide an assurance and a foundation for ongoing military and intelligence cooperation, and has been a hallmark of our relationship."

"I look forward to hearing from the Prime Minister about the conditions in Israel and the West Bank," Obama said, noting that he is concerned about settlement activity...
