Tuesday's attack is the latest in a string of attacks in the Sinai Peninsula.
The Sinai is home to armed groups who have carried out similar attacks that have killed hundreds of soldiers and police since the army toppled Mohamed Morsi as president in 2013.
A roadside bomb killed three Egyptian soldiers in Sinai on Monday.
Egypt's most dangerous armed group, Sinai Province, is believed to operate in the largely lawless area bordering Israel and the Gaza Strip.
The violence comes just days before an investment conference in the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh that Egypt hopes will project an image of stability and attract billions of dollars.

One civilian and an officer were killed in two separate attacks on Tuesday in the restive North Sinai, where the Egyptian army and militants have been at war for years....
ReplyDeleteThe civilian victim died when a bomb-laden water truck, which attempted to storm a security camp located in El-Masaeed area of Al-Arish, exploded as camp guards opened fire at the truck.
The civilian casualty was a worker at an electricity facility adjacent to the camp. The driver of the truck was also killed in the operation, according to the interior ministry.
The operation left at least 42 army soldiers and two civilians injured, health ministry undersecretary for North Sinai Tarek Khater told Ahram Online.
