Ukraine PM accuses Putin of seeking to "eliminate" country

KIEV: Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk on Saturday (Sep 13) accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of wanting to wipe out Ukraine as an independent country despite a truce deal.

"His aim is not just to take Donetsk and Lugansk," Yatsenyuk said at a conference in Kiev, referring to the separatist regions in eastern Ukraine where fighting has been raging for five months. "His goal is to take the entire Ukraine... he wants to eliminate Ukraine as an independent country," Yatsenyuk said in English.

He described the truce signed on September 5 in Minsk between Kiev, pro-Russian rebels and Moscow and the European security body the OSCE after five months of conflict in eastern Ukraine as just a "first step" to "stop a massacre". He said that having a bilateral accord with Russia was "not the best" idea and called on the United States and the European Union to play a direct role in peace talks and to guarantee Ukraine's sovereignty and independence.
"They (the Russians) will outplay us," he said. "Putin wants to get another frozen conflict and get his hands on our belly fat."
He said the conflict had made it impossible for the Kiev authorities to embark on real change, to tackle political reforms, the economic crisis and endemic corruption. He denied however that the unrest in the east, which erupted after pro-Russian separatists launched an uprising against Kiev's rule, was a "civil conflict".
"The only person who is destabilising the situation is Putin," he said. "We are in a state of war and the key aggressor is the Russian Federation."
  • Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has accused Russia of wanting to "eliminate" his country and restore the Soviet Union.
He said Ukraine was "still in a stage of war" with the "key aggressor" being Russia. Ukraine and Western countries accuse Russia of intervening on the side of pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine. Russia denies this. A fragile ceasefire has been in place since 5 September. "His goal is to take the entire Ukraine," Mr Yatsenyuk said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said Nato was the "only vehicle" to protect Ukraine, although he added he understood Ukraine could not join the alliance in the short term............................http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-29188776 13/9/14

  • Putin trying to destroy Ukraine, says its PM....
(Reuters) - Ukraine's prime minister said on Saturday Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed to destroy Ukraine as an independent country and said only NATO could defend the ex-Soviet republic from external aggression.
Kiev and its Western backers accuse Moscow of sending troops and tanks into eastern Ukraine in support of pro-Russian separatists battling Ukrainian forces in a conflict that has killed more than 3,000 people. Russia denies the accusations.
A fragile ceasefire negotiated by envoys from Ukraine, Russia, the separatists and Europe's OSCE security watchdog, has been in place in eastern Ukraine for more than a week and is broadly holding despite sporadic violations.
"We are still in a stage of war and the key aggressor is the Russian Federation ... Putin wants another frozen conflict (in eastern Ukraine)," Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk told a conference attended by European and Ukrainian lawmakers and business leaders.
Yatseniuk said Putin would not be content only with Crimea - annexed by Moscow in March - and with Ukraine's mainly Russian-speaking eastern region.
"His goal is to take all of Ukraine ... Russia is a threat to the global order and to the security of the whole of Europe," said Yatseniuk, who is known for his hawkish rhetoric.
Asked about future NATO membership, a red line for Russia, Yatseniuk said he realized the alliance was not ready now to admit Kiev, but added: "NATO in these particular circumstances is the only vehicle to protect Ukraine.".......................http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/09/13/us-ukraine-crisis-russia-yatseniuk-idUSKBN0H804G20140913?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews
