Kiev Military Aviation Resumes Flights in Special Operation Zone

Military aviation flights above the special operation zone in eastern Ukraine resumed Wednesday after being briefly halted in the wake of a military transport plane crash on Monday, the country’s national security council said.

«Flights have already been permitted, and [military planes] are already supporting our ground forces in the areas of most intense fighting," National Security and Defense Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko said.

Kiev halted military flights in the east of the country on July 14, after an An-26 military transport plane crashed in Luhansk Region Monday.

The plane, carrying seven crew members and one accompanying person, was downed in the area surrounding Lisichanka, a city near the Russian border, using a Strela-1 missile system. Several crew members have been taken hostage by independence forces.

  • Earlier on Wednesday a spokesman for the local defense forces told RIA Novosti independence supporters of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic were negotiating a swap of the crew members from the downed plane for captives held by Kiev.
Since mid-April, Kiev authorities have been conducting a special military operation in eastern Ukraine to suppress the independence movement. More than 450 civilians have died in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk republics over the past few months as a result of the conflict.

Moscow has repeatedly called on Kiev to immediately put a stop the violence and resolve the conflict through peaceful dialogue.

    2. Kyiv on July 17 accused a Russian air force jet of shooting down a Ukrainian warplane over its territory Wednesday, ratcheting up tensions along the volatile border between the two ex-Soviet states....

"A military plane from the air force of the Russian Federation carried out a rocket strike on a Ukrainian airforce SU-25 as it fulfilled its task over the territory of Ukraine," Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council said on Twitter.

The pilot of the downed fighter jet managed to eject and was later evacuated by Ukrainian forces, the military said.

The latest allegation from Kyiv comes after it said that a military transport plane downed Monday was "likely" hit by a missile fired from the Russian side of the porous border.

A spokesman for the security council confirmed Thursday that two of the eight crew members on board died in the incident, while another four have been rescued and two were captured by pro-Russian rebels.

Tensions along the frontier -- across which Ukraine says Russia is pouring fighters and weapons to fuel the separatist uprising -- are at boiling point, with Kyiv warning that Moscow has massed thousands of troops there in preparation for a possible invasion.

The US and EU on Wednesday slapped tougher sanctions on Moscow in a bid to force the Kremlin into pressuring pro-Russian rebels into ending a three-month insurgency that has claimed more than 600 lives
