- Ukraine's deposed president Viktor Yanukovych has formally asked Moscow to deploy Russian troops to re-establish law and order in his country, Russia told the UN Security Council on Monday.
"Under the influence of Western countries, there are open acts of terror and violence," Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin quoted the letter from Yanukovich to Putin in an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
"People are being persecuted for language and political reasons," he quoted the letter as saying. S'exprimant devant le Conseil de sécurité, Vitali Tchourkine a cité un "message" en ce sens adressé à M. Poutine dans lequel M. Ianoukovitch affirme que "l'Ukraine est au bord de la guerre civile à la suite des événements intervenus à Kiev". "Des vies sont menacées (...) des gens persécutés", ajoute le message cité par l'ambassadeur. L'ex-président ukrainien y "demande l'utilisation des forces armées de la fédération de Russie pour protéger la population ukrainienne", a-t-il ajouté. L'intervention russe en Crimée n'a pour objectif que de "défendre nos compatriotes et nos citoyens", a également déclaré l'ambassadeur, répétant la position de Moscou. M. Ianoukovitch est toujours le président légitime de l'Ukraine, même si son autorité est "insignifiante", a estimé lundi le Premier ministre russe Dmitri Medvedev. “We do not deny that these institutions may be involved,” the diplomat stressed, speaking about the possibility of sending an international mission to Ukraine. However, he warned that “months will pass as they observe or prepare to observe.” “God knows what may happen there during this time,” said the RF official.
