US says Turkish gov't "transparent" on rules of engagement for downing Syria helicopter.

State Department spokesperson says the US is committed to "friend" and "NATO ally" Turkey's territorial integrity...

WASHINGTON (AA) - Turkey has been "fully transparent" about the rules of engagement that led to Turkish fighter jets shooting down an airborne intruder on Monday, State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki said.

Psaki said during a daily briefing on Tuesday that the US was in close contact with Turkish officials after a Syrian army helicopter was downed for violating Turkish airspace.
"We note that the Turkish government has been fully transparent about the rules of engagement it is operating under since the Syrian government shot down a Turkish aircraft last year," Psaki said.

"Turkey is a friend and NATO ally, and we are committed to Turkey's sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Turkish Deputy Premier Bulent Arinc announced on Monday that two fighter jets scrambled from the eastern province of Malatya shot down a Syrian army helicopter at 14:25 local time after it entered 2 km deep into Turkish territory in the south and ignored repeated warnings to leave.

  • Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that Turkish security forces "did what was necessary" after the helicopter ignored warnings.

  1. Turkey operating under rules of engagement on border security: President Gül...

Turkey shot down a Syrian helicopter on Sept. 16 under its rules of engagement in the interests of maintaining border security, Turkish President Abdullah Gül said today during a meeting with Ugandan Ambassador Johnson Olwa Agara, echoing other government officials.

"As you know, Turkey’s Syrian border is not an ordinary border. There is an extraordinary situation on the border. Turkey declared its rules of engagement after certain events happened. When the helicopter passed over the border line, Turkey did what was necessary under the rules," said Gül.

Gül also said the Syrian government admitted that the helicopter had crossed the border.

  2. Turkey scrambles two fighter jets to intercept Syrian warplane...

Two Turkish F-16 jets were sent to the border with Syria after a SU-24 fighter jet from the Syrian army came closer to the border, the Turkey’s General Staff has said in a statement.

The Syrian warplane changed its route when it was 3.6 sea miles away from the border with Turkey.

The two F-16 jets scrambled to the border with Syria after it was detected that the Syrian SU-24 plane was heading east of the Cilvegözü border located in a southeastern province of Syria. The Syrian jet changed its route when it was close to the border, according to the statement released by the General Staff on its website.

Air dogfights between the two countries have increased since a Turkish F-4 jet that was flying over the Mediterranean Sea was downed by Syria on June 22, 2012, causing an international uproar.

More recently, Turkey shot down a Syrian helicopter on Sept. 16 after arguing that it had violated Turkish airspace by two kilometers.
