Members of the Armenian community in Argentina protested over the presence of Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session for the presentation of Istanbul/Constantinople as candidate to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Demonstrators gathered outside the meeting venue in Buenos Aires Sept. 7, holding banners that read 'No to Istanbul 2020.'

The group also held the pictures of the slain Turkish journalist of Armenian origins Hrant Dink. The renowned chief editor of Agos, was shot in front of his office in Istanbul on Jan. 19, 2007.

Earlier in the day, another group of Argentines organized a protest demanding the thorough investigation into the death of four Gezi protesters and a security officer killed during the police crackdown on nation-wide protests between May and July.

The IOC will elect the winning city from candidates Istanbul, Madrid, and Tokyo on Sept. 7 afternoon at a session in the Argentine capital.

  2. Istanbul/Constantinople loses out to Tokyo in bid to host 2020 Olympics...

Istanbul missed out on the historic opportunity to host the 2020 Olympics after International Olympic Committee (IOC) delegates meeting in Buenos Aires elected to award the Games to Tokyo in a second-round vote.

IOC delegates eliminated Madrid after the first round of voting, leaving only Istanbul and Tokyo.

Both Madrid and Istanbul were tied after a first vote – meaning Tokyo topped that round – and it had to be put to a second decisive vote to see who went out. Istanbul then garnered 49 of the 94 votes cast to progress and kept their hopes alive of bringing for the first time to Turkey the Games. Tokyo already hosted the 1964 Summer Games.

In its final presentation, the delegation representing Istanbul put the emphasis on the country's young population and vowed that the country was united to "mobilize all means" to prepare for the Summer Games.

It also stressed that awarding Istanbul with the Olympics would send a powerful message of peace to the world.

Giant screens have been installed in nine different corners of Istanbul, including the Sultanahmet Square, next to the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.

.....http://www.protothema.gr/sports/article/308559/tokio-madriti-i-konstadinoupoli-/

  4. Olympics 2020: Tokyo wins race to host Games...

Tokyo has been chosen to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games ahead of Istanbul and Madrid.

The Japanese capital won a final round of voting by International Olympic Committee (IOC) members in Buenos Aires to beat Istanbul by 60 votes to 36.

Madrid had earlier been eliminated in a first-round ballot.

The announcement was met with jubilant scenes in Japan, as Tokyo prepares to host the event for the first time since 1964.

When IOC president Jacques Rogge - who will retire after 12 years in the role on Tuesday - announced the winning city, the Tokyo delegation jumped to their feet in celebration and waved the Japan flag.

A number of them were overcome with emotion and wept, following two years of intense lobbying.

"I would like to thank everyone in the Olympic movement and we will host a wonderful Olympic Games," a delighted Prime Minster Shinzo Abe said.

Bid leader Tsunekazu Takeda added: "It is a great honour that Tokyo has been chosen. The first thing I will do when I return is to thank all of Japan." .....http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/24002795

  5. Turks left looking for answers after fifth Olympics Games rejection...

ISTANBUL - Disappointed and disillusioned Turks have begun the now-familiar routine of trying to understand why the IOC again overlooked their bid to host the Olympics over two continents after Istanbul was beaten by Tokyo in the race to host the 2020 Games.

Crowds in Istanbul's historic Sultanahmet Square, where the decision was broadcast live on big screens in front of hopeful hundreds, rolled up their flags and prepared to leave as the city was comprehensively beaten by the Japanese capital after Madrid was knocked out after the first round.

Once the result was announced and Istanbul had failed for the fifth time to land the Games, the inquest began.

Civil unrest, the unstable political situation on the country's doorstep and a wave of high-profile athletics doping cases are seen as the chief culprits for the IOC's decision to overlook Turkey again after Istanbul failed to land the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 Games.

While the unrest in neighboring Syria was seen by some as counting against the bid, others felt a heavy-handed police crackdown during recent anti-government protests were also instrumental in dampening Turkey's image.
