US House of Representatives passes bill on military aid for Ukraine

The bills on military aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, on the seizure of the frozen Russian sovereign assets in order to give them to Kiev, and on additional sanctions against China have passed the US House of Representatives.

The final vote was preceded on Saturday - as the lawmakers rarely convene meetings on weekends - by a brief debate on these bills, which, in fact, are put together into one package.

House Speaker, Republican Mike Johnson put forward a proposal to formalize this form of additional funding of the military needs of Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan from the US federal budget.

On April 17, he presented the bills from the package, which showed that the aid to Kiev would be in the form of a loan. US President Joe Biden, Democrat, who had initially opposed that his administration's request for military aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan would be in three bills, later supported Johnson’s initiative.

  4. The US House of Representatives on Saturday passed a bill with $60.84 billion in Ukraine-related aid, amid warnings from the Biden administration that Ukraine could face battlefield setbacks without further assistance.
The House of Representatives passed the bill, dubbed the Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, in a vote of 311 in favor, 112 opposed and one voting present. House lawmakers rejected a series of Republican amendments to slash funding in the bill.

The legislation includes $23.3 billion to replenish defense articles and services provided to Ukraine, $13.8 billion for the procurement of advanced weapons systems and $11.3 billion for US military operations in the region. The bill also includes a measure to provide long-range Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) to Ukraine.
On Thursday, CIA Director William Burns said that Ukraine could lose on the battlefield by the end of 2024 without further assistance from the US Congress.
