UKMTO receives report of explosion near vessel east of Djibouti

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), an information conduit between the military and commercial shipping, has received a report of an explosion near a vessel 70 nautical miles (about 130km) east of Djibouti.

No damage was reported to the vessel and there were no injuries to the crew, the UKMTO said.

The incident comes as Yemen’s Houthis have been carrying out regular drone and missile attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, in what the rebel group says is a show of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

The United States and the United Kingdom have bombed more than a dozen Houthi sites in Yemen, officials said, as the Yemeni rebel group stepped up its attacks on ships in the Red Sea in protest against Israel’s war on Gaza.

In a joint statement on Saturday, the US and UK said their military action targeted 18 Houthi sites across eight locations in Yemen, and included attacks on underground weapons and missile storage facilities, air defence systems, radars and a helicopter.

  1. American and British forces have carried out a fresh wave of strikes against 18 Houthi targets in Yemen, a joint statement said, following weeks of unrelenting attacks on Red Sea shipping by the Iran-backed rebels.

The strikes "specifically targeted 18 Houthi targets across eight locations in Yemen associated with Houthi underground weapons storage facilities, missile storage facilities, one-way attack unmanned aerial systems, air defence systems, radars, and a helicopter," said the joint statement.
