Malta says to help Italy relocate migrants aboard two ships

Malta has pledged to take in an undisclosed number of the 450 migrants that were carried by two ships stuck at sea due to a diplomatic dispute between Italy and Malta, Maltese government said on Saturday.

Ezadeen: Italy mounts rescue for 450 migrants abandoned off coast

Italy scrambled a helicopter early on Friday to take control of a crewless merchant ship that lost power as it sailed towards the coast with 450 migrants on board, in the latest maritime incident to hit the waters south of Europe.

The helicopter has been sent to lower men onto the vessel, which is floating in rough seas some 40 miles (65 kilometres) off Capo di Leuca, the tip of Italy's heel, the air force said.

211 People Rescued, 267 Still on Board Norman Atlantic Ferry (Italian Navy)

211 out of more than 470 passengers of the Norman Atlantic passenger ferry, which caught fire Sunday as it was sailing from Greece to Italy, have been rescued and 267 are still on board, the Italian Navy stated Monday [1].
"211 people have been saved, 267 are still on board," the Italian Navy said on its official Twitter page.

China committed to settling maritime disputes via dialogue (Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, Athens)

China is committed to settling maritime disputes through dialogues and negotiations, on the basis of respecting historical facts and international law, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said here Friday.

Li made the remarks when addressing the China-Greece Marine Cooperation Forum, where he called for stronger maritime cooperation between the two nations and expounded China's viewpoints on maritime affairs.

China, Greece ink $4.6 billion in deals. "Greece can become China's gateway in Europe and the start of a European trade corridor"

Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang visited  port of Piraeus in Greece on Friday, after a series of trade and investment deals worth $4.6 billion were signed between the two sides during Li 's three-day visit to Greece.

The deals included multi-billion-dollar Chinese bank loans to build at least 10 Greek-owned ships in Chinese shipyards. There were also agreements on the construction of solar energy parks in Greece, AFP reported.
