Covid: Passengers stranded as countries ban UK travel - BBC News

Passengers stranded as countries ban UK travel

Passengers have been left stranded attempting to get in and out of Wales after several countries banned most UK travel over a new coronavirus variant.

Bukola Sokunbi-Walton, from Galway, was travelling from London to spend Christmas with her children when her ferry from Holyhead was cancelled.

Meanwhile, another man has been unable to return to to mid Wales from the Liberian capital Monrovia.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is to chair an emergency meeting on Monday.

The Welsh Government said it was seeking "urgent talks" with UK ministers over the implications for Welsh ports.

European Union member states are due to meet in Brussels to discuss a co-ordinated response.

The Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, France and Canada, have all suspended flights from the UK...

  1. A slew of countries closed their borders to Britain on Monday over fears of a highly infectious new coronavirus strain, heightening global panic, causing travel chaos and raising the prospect of UK food shortages days before the Brexit cliff edge.

India, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Russia, Jordan and Hong Kong suspended travel for Britons after Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned that a mutated variant of the virus, up to 70% more transmissible, had been identified in the country. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman closed their borders completely.

Several other nations have suspended travel from Britain including France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Ireland, Belgium, Israel and Canada – although scientists said the strain may already be circulating in countries with less advanced detection methods than the United Kingdom.

The discovery of the new strain, just months before vaccines are expected to be widely available, sowed fresh panic in a pandemic that has killed about 1.7 million people worldwide and more than 67,000 in Britain.

Australia said two people who travelled from the United Kingdom to New South Wales state were found to be carrying the mutated virus.

  2. Australia said on Monday it had detected cases of the new fast-spreading coronavirus strain identified in the United Kingdom, while Hong Kong and India said they would suspend flights from Britain.

Two travellers from the United Kingdom to Australia’s New South Wales state were found carrying the mutated variant of the virus that Britain has said could be up to 70% more infectious. Both are in hotel quarantine, and the recent spike in infections in Sydney is not linked to this, authorities said.

The new strain has prompted Britain’s European neighbours and several others including Canada and Iran to close their doors to travellers from the country.

  3. The United States might decide to ban travel from the United Kingdom where a new variant of the coronavirus has spread, U.S. Assistant Secretary for Health Brett Giroir said on Monday, but he added nothing had been decided yet.

  5. L'Europa in allarme, riunione d'emergenza a Bruxelles.
