Representatives from the 23 countries of the US-led coalition battling the terrorists’ self-declared “caliphate” gathered in Rome to assess and renew their efforts.
Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni and US Secretary of State John Kerry told their allies that, since their meeting six months ago, Daesh had suffered setbacks in its core territory in Syria and Iraq.
But the hosts warned that the group is adapting to the pressure on its heartland and is redirecting efforts to Libya, where it has seized new territory, and to attacks like those in Paris, Ankara and San Bernadino, California.
“We are surely not here to brag about anything,” Kerry said, after saying Daesh fighters have lost 40 per cent of their territory in Iraq and 20 per cent in Syria.-

ReplyDeleteUne vingtaine de pays membres de la coalition internationale rassemblée pour combattre le groupe djihadiste État islamique ont salué mardi à Rome les progrès enregistrés contre Daech, qui a perdu du terrain tant en Irak qu'en Syrie, a affirmé le chef de la diplomatie belge, Didier Reynders, en exprimant toutefois son inquiétude face à la situation en Libye.
Didier Reynders représentait la Belgique à cette réunion rassemblant des ministres des Affaires étrangères ou des représentants de 23 pays, en présence de l'Américain John Kerry, dont le pays a pris la tête en août 2014 de cette coalition anti-Daech. La réunion était destinée à faire le point sur la lutte contre l'EI, qui a cédé du terrain en Syrie et en Irak mais se renforce en Libye.
"Nous allons dégrader et détruire Daech et nous devons le faire plus rapidement", a affirmé John Kerry à l'ouverture de la conférence.
Le ministre allemand des Affaires étrangères, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, a affirmé que les premiers signes d'un succès dans la lutte contre l'EI étaient apparus en Irak, où les djihadistes sunnites ont perdu 25% du terrain qu'ils avaient conquis lors d'une offensive éclair en août 2014 et où plusieurs villes ont été libérées......rtbf.be
