Taliban enter northern Afghan city after fierce fighting

After fierce fighting, Taliban militants entered the capital of Afghanistan's northern province of Kunduz on Monday and surrounded the provincial police department, a police spokesman in the Kunduz city said.

"Taliban have surrounded provincial police department and I am calling upon central government to dispatch reinforcement," Sayed Sarwar Hussaini told Xinhua.

However, he said clashes have been continuing in different parts of the city and the security forces would do their best to repulse the Taliban offensives.

  2. Taliban seize half of major Afghan city ...

The Taliban Sept. 28 seized half of an Afghan provincial capital, sending panicked residents fleeing as the hardline Islamists for the first time breached a major city since being ousted from power in 2001.

Marauding insurgents hoisted their flag over the main square of the northern city of Kunduz, freed prisoners from the local jail and set fire to the local intelligence agency headquarters, witnesses and officials said.

The Taliban's incursion into Kunduz barely nine months after the NATO combat mission ended marks a major psychological blow to the country's Western-trained security forces.

"Half the city has fallen into the hands of Taliban insurgents," Kunduz police spokesman Sayed Sarwar Hussaini told a news conference, adding local forces had not yet received promised reinforcements from Kabul......AFP..........hurriyetdailynews.com

  3. Afghan forces launch bid to retake Kunduz from Taliban...

Afghan forces have begun an operation to retake the city of Kunduz, after suffering a major military reverse when it was seized by the Taliban on Monday.

Security forces have cleared the area around the central prison and the police headquarters, officials said.

The US said it carried out an air strike on the city early on Tuesday.

In one of their biggest assaults since 2001, the Taliban had forced Afghan troops and officials to retreat to the airport and freed hundreds from jail.

The attack on the northern city came as President Ashraf Ghani completed a year in office.............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-34387914
