Lack of Cooperation Between West, Syria Undermines Efforts to Battle ISIL/ISIS (Vitaly Churkin)

According to the Russian representative, the international community lacks unity in addressing the subject mainly due to the United States and other western countries not wanting to cooperate with Syria.

“Our western colleagues can’t accept the necessity to focus on the terrorist threat in Syria and Iraq in our joint fight against ISIL.”

Last month, Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader Halqi told Sputnik that the strikes of the US-led coalition on the Islamic State positions in Syria are unproductive, partly because they are not coordinated with the Syrian side.

The ISIL extremist group, notorious for its human right atrocities, has seized vast territories in Syria and Iraq in recent years.

The US-led international coalition has been conducting airstrikes against ISIL positions in Iraq since 2014, later expanding the attacks to include ISIL targets in Syria.

Syria has been mired in a civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting opposition and radical Islamist militant groups, including the Islamic State. Since the beginning of the civil war in Syria, the West, including the United States, have been vocally supportive of some of the rebel groups in Syria, stating that they want the government of President Assad to be changed.
