Iraq PM orders troops to hold fast in Ramadi: spokesman

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on Sunday ordered government forces to "hold their positions" in Ramadi, after the Islamic State group said it overran the strategic city, his spokesman said.

Abadi said troops, tribesmen and other elite forces "must hold their positions and preserve them and not allow Daesh (IS) to extend to other areas in Ramadi," spokesman Saad al-Hadithi said.

"There is continuous air cover that will help ground troops there hold their positions while waiting for support from other forces and the Popular Mobilisation Units," he said of an umbrella group for Shiite militias.

  2. Iran-backed Shia militias have been ordered to recapture the Iraqi city of Ramadi seized by Islamic State (IS) militants on Sunday, reports say....

About 500 people are estimated to have died in several days of fighting in the city, which lies only 70 miles (112km) west of the capital, Baghdad.

A regional government official spoke of people fleeing Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, "in great numbers".

But the US has said it is confident the capture of Ramadi can be reversed.

Speaking in South Korea, Secretary of State John Kerry said: "I am convinced that as the forces are redeployed and as the days flow in the weeks ahead that's going to change."....BBC

  4. Iraq must own difficult fight to reclaim Ramadi: US officials...

The United States will support Iraq's difficult fight to reclaim lost territory in Ramadi and elsewhere, but the battlefield setback has not prompted consideration of deploying U.S. ground combat forces, U.S. military and civilian officials told Reuters on Monday.

"Having American troops drawn into this fight... (would come) with a host of problems," said one U.S. military official, speaking on condition of anonymity. A second U.S. military official also said the option was not under consideration.

A civilian U.S. official told Reuters: "What we need is for everybody who is in Iraq to defend Iraq, and in the end, it's got to be Iraqis."...

"Remember whose country it is and who's got to take responsibility for it. It's not the United States, in this case. It's the Iraqis," the civilian U.S. official said.
