Time for Ukraine to resolutely get rid of Communist symbols (Petro Poroshenko)

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is confident that it's time for Ukraine to resolutely get rid of the symbols of the Communist regime, which killed millions of innocent people.

Poroshenko announced this at an official ceremony on Sunday to commemorate the victims of political repression at National Historic and Memorial Reserve "Bykivnia Graves," one of the biggest burial places of victims of totalitarianism. Historians estimate that over 100,000 people were killed in Bykivnia.

"Not long ago I did what I had to – I signed laws on decommunisation, on the recognition of the heroes of the national liberation struggle; and several laws that lay down a contemporary version of the policy of national memory and clear it from an imperial coating," he said.

"Ukraine as a state has done its job, then historians should work, while the government should take care of the future," he stressed.

The Ukrainian presidential press service reported on Friday evening that Petro Poroshenko had signed a package of laws on "decommunisation," which was passed by Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada on April 9, 2015.

The laws ban Nazi and Communist symbols and the "public denial of the criminal nature of the Communist totalitarian regime 1917–1991"; they open former KGB archives; replace the Soviet term "great patriotic war" with the European second world war, and provide public recognition to anyone who fought for Ukrainian independence in the 20th century.

  • Ukraine undergoes reform to become "true European state" (Poroshenko)

Ukraine is aware of its responsibility and is conducting reforms to change and become a "true European state."

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko raised the Flag of Europe near the Presidential Administration on the occasion of the Day of Europe on Saturday, May 16.

The Ukrainian President stressed that Ukrainians deserved to be a part of the united Europe.

"In November 2013, Ukraine firmly declared its European choice with millions of people who came to the European Maidan," he said.

Poroshenko reminded that Ukrainian students had paid their blood for upholding the European values when they were beaten on the Maidan. Later, the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred sacrificed their lives for these values.

Nowadays, Ukraine is aware of its responsibility and is conducting European reforms in order to change and become a "true European state."

The first step in that direction was made with the signature of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU. Twenty EU member states have already ratified this document.

"Today, we work hard to implement all the reforms declared in the Agreement," Poroshenko said. According to him, the National Council of Reforms was established to accelerate the reforms. "Our main goal is to provide an opportunity for our children to live in the country that is a European Union member.

Nothing will make Ukraine give up the chosen path," the president said.

  1. Poroshenko: Ukraine in ‘Real War’ With Russia ...

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko says Ukraine is in a "real war" with Russia, not just pro-Russia separatists.

In an interview with the BBC, Poroshenko warned that he believes Russia is preparing a military offensive for which Ukrainians must be ready. He said Ukraine must not give Russia "any tiny chance for provocation."

Poroshenko said Saturday's capture of two Russian soldiers in eastern Ukraine is "strong evidence" that Russia is behind the separatist movement in the east.

On Tuesday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with Russia's Foreign Secretary Sergei Lavrov about the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Stoltenberg called for an end to Russia's military exercises close to the Ukrainian border and said Russia must be more transparent about its military activities.

Lavrov said before the meeting that he would listen to NATO's concerns..........http://www.voanews.com/content/poroshenko-ukraine-real-war-russia/2779117.html

  2. Russia will sue Ukraine to recover commercial debts, Medvedev said at a meeting with Putin, an UNIAN correspondent in Russia reported...

Putin in turn demanded that Medvedev take the situation with the payment of Ukraine's sovereign eurobonds worth $3 billion to Russia under his control.

Medvedev said that "the future of not only sovereign debt [owed to Russia], but also commercial debt estimated at about $25 billion" [owed to Russian commercial banks] is important to Russia. According to him, a large part of Ukraine's debts comes from Russian commercial banks, where the main stockholder is the state. "So, in any case, we'll have to monitor what has been happening there," Medvedev said.

In his words, even if the Russian state isn't a stockholder, the point at issue are large-sized Russian banks.

"In fact, it is the announcement of default, coupled with the declaration of a force majeure situation, on the respective obligations. In this situation, both the Russian state and Russian commercial banks have to adequately respond to all this. In any case, if such a decision has been taken, all the possible means of protection, including judicial ones, should be used to [recover] the commercial debt," Medvedev said.

As was reported, the former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in December 2013 agreed with Russia on issuing a $15 billion loan to Ukraine. Before Yanukovych fled, his government headed by Mykola Azarov had managed to receive $3 billion from Moscow.

On May 19, 2015, Ukraine's parliament commissioned the Cabinet of Ministers to introduce a moratorium on the payment of foreign debts to private creditors, having limited the term for decision-making on this to July 1, 2016.
