Coalition airstrikes resume in Yemen

Coalition airstrikes resumed against Houthi militia positions in Yemen’s main southern city Aden after a five-day ceasefire expired late Sunday, army officials said.

Air raids hit the Houthi-held presidential palace in Aden as well as a base of the pro-Houthi Special Forces in Yemen’s second city, military officials and witnesses said.

Since late March the coalition had been bombing Iran-backed Houthi milita in Yemen, who had seized Sanaa and have swept across many other regions, to stop their advance.

The truce was a Saudi Arabian initiative. It largely held, although clashes between rebels and pro-government forces killed dozens across south Yemen on Saturday.

Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmed, the U.N. envoy to Yemen, on Sunday called “all parties” to recommit to the truce for at least five more days.

  1. Houthi violations ended Yemen truce: Foreign minister...

Saudi-led coalition resumed airstrikes in Yemen on Monday after a five-day humanitarian pause because the Houthi militia and its allies violated the truce, Yemen's Foreign Minister Reyad Yassin Abdulla said by telephone.

The coalition is not now considering any new ceasefire offer despite a United Nations plea to extend the truce, Abdulla said, but he added that the renewed strikes would avoid Sanaa airport and Aden and Hodaida seaports to let aid get in.

  3. Iran is using its sea power in the Gulf to show it will not be cowed by Washington's newly assertive Arab allies, prompting critics to accuse Tehran of destabilising the region...

Iranian ships fired shots at a Singapore-flagged tanker which it said damaged an Iranian oil platform, causing the vessel to flee, and seized a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most important oil route, over a debt row.

The incidents coincided with a push by Washington to reassure Gulf Arab monarchies that their interests would not be threatened by a nuclear accord that Tehran and world powers are trying to reach by the end of June.
