Saudi-Led Coalition Operation in Yemen Has No Legal Foundation (Sergei Lavrov)

The Saudi Arabia-led air operation targeting the positions of Houthi rebels in Yemen does not have any legal basis, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Rossiya Segodnya news agency's general director, Dmitry Kiselev, in an exclusive interview on Monday.

"As of now it [the Saudi-led operation] has no international legal foundation. Of course, we were a bit disappointed, to say the least, by the fact that the operation was launched even without any consultations either in the [UN] Security Council or via bilateral channels," Lavrov said.

Lavrov stated that Russia values its relations with Saudi Arabia and other members of the coalition, but was critical of the fact that the coalition had asked the Security Council to approve the military operation in Yemen post factum.

Yemen is suffering from a violent conflict between Houthi rebels and government forces. 1. The international legality of the Saudi Arabia-led military operation in Yemen is less significant than the stability of the region, former US National Security Council Near East Affairs Director Kenneth Pollack told Sputnik on Monday...

“[Regional stability] is the most important thing, not what is legal or what is not legal,” Pollack said. “I think in a situation like Yemen, that’s almost irrelevant.”

Pollack explained that ultimately, the military intervention in Yemen is unlikely to produce positive results for either side of the conflict.

“Foreign military intervention [in Yemen] is strategically unlikely to make that situation better and I think that the real danger is it helps to actually undermine the strength and stability of many of these other countries,” he stated.

Pollack also commented on the remarks made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday, denouncing the Yemen military campaign as lacking an international legal foundation. Lavrov further condemned the Saudi Arabia-led coalition for failing to consult the UN Security Council or other bilateral channels...............http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20150406/1020539520.html#ixzz3WYHo3i5K

  2. Russia calls on Yemeni conflict sides to stop hostilities — Lavrov...

Russia has called on the Yemeni conflict sides to stop hostilities and return to the search for national conciliation ways, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday.

"We call on all the sides — the Houthis and coalition that launches airstrikes on the Houthi positions, to stop violence," the minister said. "Civilian facilities are more often damaged and ordinary people suffer from these strikes. Everybody should stop fighting and return to the process for the achievement of national conciliation in Yemen," he said.

Lavrov also said that "certain steps to this end have been made earlier and welcomed." "We participated in the ‘Friends of Yemen’ group with the region’s countries and Western partners, but, perhaps, the implementation of these agreements was impeded by the desire of that ort other side not to build national unity, but get unilateral advantage within the framework of the settlement process," he said. "The sad mistakes should be taken into account, it is necessary to draw the lessons and re-launch a true national dialogue with all sides without exception."..........http://tass.ru/en/world/787485
