Greece seeks more EU funds to tackle migrants problem

Greece's Defence Minister has called on the European Union to supply more funding to enable his country to deal with a growing number of migrants.
Panos Kammenos said on Tuesday that the increasing number of Syrian refugees entering the county was a "huge problem for Greece".

"It is not possible for Greece to cope with the migrants issue," he said.

Greece's Deputy Migration Minister Tasia Christodolou also announced that Greece will convert out-of-use public buildings into migrant admission centers, under a plan to tackle the problem.

"The government has decided to realize an urgent plan about the migrants," said Christoudolou.

Greece has also applied to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), for help in overcoming the Syrian refugee burden.

Greek police said they had caught a total of 884 immigrants who had tried to sneak their way into the country illegally.
