Israeli Government freezes construction of 1,500 units in Jerusalem’s Har Homa

Defying Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s pre-election rhetoric that settlement construction would continue in Jerusalem unabated, the government on Wednesday indicated that the planned construction of 1,500 apartments in east Jerusalem’s Har Homa has been temporarily frozen.

While no official statement on the freeze has been made by the Construction and Housing Ministry or the Jerusalem Municipality, a source from the ministry confirmed that at least two key planning meetings scheduled within the next week have been cancelled.

Although the rationale for the cancellations remains unclear, the source, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, indicated that the postponement is due to foundering diplomatic relations between the US and Israel.
