Indonesia rejects Australia's offer to exchange convicts

Indonesia on Thursday rejected an idea to exchange Australian convicts scheduled for execution in the near future with Indonesian convicts under Australian custody offered by Australian government.

The rejection was conveyed by Indonesian President Joko Widodo to respond to the offer. Widodo said that the rejection doesn't mean Indonesia is a hostile country to Australia.

The president said that Indonesia has its own political and legal sovereignty that has to be respected by Australia. "We want to preserve good relations with any country. We want to be a good friend to any country. But when it comes to legal sovereignty, it is uncompromising. I would say it firmly there will be no exchange,"the president was quoted by local media as saying when attending a Chinese festivity event in Bogor on Thursday.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi meanwhile said that Australia Foreign Minister Julie Bishop had called her recently regarding the offer.

Australian citizens Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan were part of 10 convicts who were held in Indonesia's Nusakambangan high security prison, Central Java and scheduled for execution in the near future.

The two were sentenced to death for smuggling 8.2 kilograms of illegal drugs to Indonesia. Along with them, there are other foreigners to be executed by Indonesian firing squad. They come from Spain, France, Brazil, Ghana and Nigeria.

  1. Australia complains over Indonesia's treatment of death row prisoners...

(Reuters) - Australia has complained about the treatment of two drug smugglers, who face execution in Indonesia, and wants to lodge a formal protest after photographs were published of a smiling police chief with the men, officials said on Friday.

The planned executions of Myuran Sukumaran, 33, and Andrew Chan, 31, have ramped up diplomatic tension between Australia and Indonesia after repeated pleas for mercy on their behalf. They are among a group of up to 11 convicts, mostly foreigners, due to be executed soon on the prison island of Nusakambangan.

The pair were moved from their prison in Bali on Wednesday, shackled and under heavy guard and taken by armored vehicle, first to board a flight to Java and then a short ferry ride to the island.

Photos of a senior police officer posing with the two men on board the flight to Java, surrounded by balaclava-clad security officers, provoked outrage in Australia..............http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/06/us-indonesia-executions-australia-idUSKBN0M202C20150306?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

  2. Indonesia Announces Delay in Foreigner Executions ...

Indonesian officials said Friday they are uncertain about the timing of planned executions of foreign prisoners from half a dozen nations, who have been found guilty of drug charges. Jakarta is under increasing pressure, particularly from Australia, which could have broader economic and political repercussions.

A spokesman for Indonesia’s attorney general Friday said there is no clear timetable for the execution of the 11 prisoners being held at a maximum detention facility on Nusakambangan Island.

The prisoners, from Australia, Brazil, the Philippines, France, Ghana, Nigeria and Indonesia are awaiting the firing squad after being found guilty of drug smuggling or involvement in illegal drugs.................http://www.voanews.com/content/among-scrutiny-indonesia-announces-delay-in-foreigner-executions/2670006.html

  3. Indonesian minister threatens Australia with ‘tsunami’ of asylum seekers over drug smugglers’ executions...

An Indonesian minister has threatened to release a “human tsunami” of 10,000 asylum seekers to Australia amid tensions with PM Tony Abbott’s government over Canberra’s objections to the impending execution of two Aussie drug smugglers.

“If Canberra keeps doing things that displease Indonesia, Jakarta will surely let the illegal immigrants go to Australia,” Indonesia’s coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs, Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno, told local TV on Tuesday.

Abbott’s Liberal-National coalition came to power in 2013 on an anti-illegal immigrant platform. Abbott has since introduced policies which see military ships patrolling Australia’s water for migrant boats.

Tedjo said that Indonesia has so far been partnering with Australia to keep migrants from illegally crossing the Timor Sea to Australia, but suggested that the cooperation may stop if Canberra continues to antagonize its neighbor in advocating for clemency for the two Australian nationals imprisoned by Jakarta since 2005 for heroin smuggling............http://rt.com/news/239421-indonesia-executions-australia-minister/

  4. An Indonesian court on Thursday postponed the hearing of two Australian death row convicts for another week and will not decide the case until after April 1...

Australians Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, convicted in 2005 as the ringleaders of a plot to smuggle heroin out of Indonesia, are appealing against the rejection of their request for presidential clemency.

Australia has been pursuing an eleventh-hour campaign to save the lives of the two members of the so-called Bali Nine, but President Joko Widodo has refused to budge.

The two are among a group of 10 drug convicts due to be executed together by firing squad at the prison island of Nusakambangan. Others in the group include citizens of France, Brazil, the Philippines, Ghana, Nigeria and Indonesia
