Canada preparing to send jets to combat Islamic State

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is set to announce on Friday that his country will supply military jet to join the U.S.-led mission against the Islamic State, according to reports in the Canadian media.

Harper is looking to send CF-18 fighter jets and CC-150 refueling planes, even though his government has yet to make a formal decision, the CBC reported Thursday.

The prime minister will make his announcement Friday about Canada's Middle East plans, a day before the end of the initial 30-day deployment of advisers, according to the CBC.

Harper told the Canadian parliament on Wednesday that Canada has 26 soldiers in Iraq, but that the number could rise, though not more than the 69 soldiers the government initially agreed to send to cope with the current crisis.

Harper was unequivocal Wednesday about the need to be involved.

"The government and most Canadians have judged that the situation in that part of the world is very serious,'' he said. "And if it's allowed to continue and to fester it represents a very serious danger to the national security of this country. We will work with our partners around the world to minimize those threats to Canadians."

  1. Canada against ISIS: Motion calls for airstrikes, no ground troops...

Canada will join its allies in conducting air strikes against Islamic State militants for up to six months but will not deploy ground troops in combat operations, according to a government motion tabled Friday in the House.

While the air strikes are limited, for now, to Iraq, they could be expanded to Syria if the government there gives the green light, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said during a rare speech to the House of Commons on Friday. Harper addressed MPs to outline his government’s plan for Canada’s contribution to the fight against ISIS.

The motion says the government will contribute “military assets” against ISIS, including “air strike capability for a period of up to six months.”

Canada will only launch air strikes against ISIS in countries where it has government support, Harper said in his speech. At present, that is only Iraq.

Canada’s mission will also contribute one air-to-air refuelling aircraft, two Aurora surveillance aircraft, and the required air crews and support personnel, Harper said.

The government will also extend the original 30-day non-combat advisory mission, in which up to 69 special operations soldiers are advising security forces in northern Iraq...............Read more: http://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/canada-against-isis-motion-calls-for-airstrikes-no-ground-troops-1.2037316#ixzz3F793SKAC
