U.S. begins airstrikes against ISIS/ISIL in Syria

Tomahawk missiles launched from the sea initiated the strike, followed by bombers and fighters....

The airstrikes Tuesday took place in the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa, a U.S. official told CNN. It’s the first strikes against the terror group inside the country since President Barack Obama’s announcement this month that he was prepared to expand the American efforts beyond targets in Iraq.

All foreign partners participating in the strikes with the United States are Arab countries, a senior U.S. military official told CNN. Those nations include Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.

Diplomatic sources told CNN that Qatar was also involved, though it was not clear whether Qatar actually conducted airstrikes itself.

The U.S. and “partner nation forces” began striking ISIS targets using fighters, bombers and Tomahawk missiles, Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said, though he didn’t specify a geographic location.
Citing the ongoing operations, Kirby said the Pentagon would not provide additional details immediately. But a U.S. military official said the strikes are meant to target the ability of ISIS to command and control, resupply and train.

  2. The United States and partner nations have begun airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) targets in Syria, the Pentagon said on Monday. The strikes involved fighter, bomber and missiles fired from ships in the region.....

"I can confirm that US military and partner nation forces are undertaking military action against ISIL (Islamic State group) terrorists in Syria using a mix of fighter, bomber and Tomahawk land-attack missiles," spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said in a statement.

The decision to conduct the strikes was undertaken earlier on Monday by the head of US Central Command, General Lloyd Austin, “under authorisation granted him by the commander in chief,” Kirby said.

The Pentagon said the operations were ongoing and would not provide further details until later. “We will provide more details later as operationally appropriate,” Kirby said.

The bombing raids came after President Barack Obama warned in a speech on September 10 that the United States was prepared to attack IS militants, also known as ISIS and ISIL, in Syria.

Washington began airstrikes against IS targets in Iraq on August 8.

Military officials have said the US would target militants’ command and control centres, re-supply facilities, training camps and other key logistical sites.

“We will be prepared to strike ISIL targets in Syria that degrade ISIL’s capabilities,” Army General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told senators last week. “This won’t look like a shock-and-awe campaign, because that’s simply not how ISIL is organised, but it will be a persistent and sustainable campaign.

  3. U.S. launches strikes on ISIS targets in Syria....

The United States, with the aid of its coalition allies, has begun air strikes against Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) targets in Syria, U.S. officials told Reuters news agency.

Using a mix of manned aircraft - fighter jets and bombers - plus Tomahawk cruise missiles, the strikes were part of the expanded military campaign that President Barack Obama authorized nearly two weeks ago in order to disrupt and destroy ISIS militants.

U.S. officials said the airstrikes began around 0030 GMT, and were conducted by the U.S. and other nations. The first wave of strikes finished about 90 minutes later, but the operation was expected to continue for several more hours, according to one U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly by name about an ongoing mission.

Since the military operation was ongoing, no more details could be provided yet, Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon’s press secretary, told reporters on Tuesday.

He did not name the partner nations participating in the operation; however U.S. officials have said the U.S. would not launch this mission alone and anti-ISIS coalition nations had been expected to participate.

Some of the airstrikes were against ISIS targets in Raqqa, regarded as the militant group’s stronghold.....................................................http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2014/09/23/U-S-strikes-ISIS-targets-in-Syria-.html

  4. Arab role may be key to U.S. strikes in Syria: U.S. officials...

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama wants some Arab participation in air strikes against the Islamic State in order to expand the campaign to Syria, reflecting U.S. concerns that any long-term campaign must count on regional involvement, U.S. officials say.

Obama authorized air strikes against Islamic State targets in Syria almost two weeks ago and was briefed on U.S. war plans last week by the U.S. military's Central Command. But Obama held off on approving those plans as diplomats pushed ahead with efforts to forge a coalition.

Two U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Arab participation was essential for Obama as he looked to expand the American campaign of air strikes to Syria from Iraq, where the U.S. military has already carried out 190 strikes as of Monday................http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/09/23/us-syria-crisis-usa-military-idUSKCN0HI00520140923?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

  5. The United States and allied nations have launched their first air strikes against Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria, the Pentagon has said....

Spokesman Rear Adm John Kirby said a mix of fighter and bomber jets and Tomahawk missiles was used in the attack.

The strikes were expected as part of President Barack Obama's pledge to "degrade and destroy" IS, which has claimed control of portions of a vast area between Syria and Iraq.

The United States has already undertaken 190 air strikes in Iraq since August.

On Monday, Rear Adm Kirby confirmed "U.S. military and partner nation forces" were undertaking military action in Syria but did not give details.

"Given that these operations are ongoing, we are not in a position to provide additional details at this time," he said in a statement.

1. Israel downs Syria warplane above Golan Heights ....

Israel shot down a Syrian fighter jet over the Golan Heights on Tuesday, the army said, indicating that it had crossed the ceasefire line into the Israeli-occupied sector.

It was the most serious incident to take place on the strategic plateau since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.

“A warplane that penetrated Israeli territory was successfully shot down a short while ago by the air defense systems along the Syrian border,” a military statement said, without giving further details.

Army radio said it was apparently a MiG-21 fighter jet which was shot down by a surface-to-air Patriot missile, with the wreckage landing on the Syrian-controlled side of the plateau.

The downing came just three weeks after Israel shot down a drone over the Golan as heavy fighting raged on the Syrian side, most of which has been seized by rebels fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.

Since the uprising erupted more than three years ago, the plateau has been tense, with a growing number of rockets and mortar rounds hitting the Israeli side, most of them stray, prompting occasional retaliatory fire.

But there have been several incidents of intentional fire, one of which killed an Israeli teenager in June.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometers of the Golan during the Six-Day War of 1967, then annexed it in 1981 in a move never recognized by the international community.

Some 510 square kilometers of the Golan remain on the Syrian side of the ceasefire line, with UN forces overseeing a buffer zone stretching some 70 kilometers from Lebanon in the north to Jordan in the south.

Local media said the Syrian troops are engaged in battles against the Nusra Front in the Syrian-controlled side of the Golan Heights in al-Qunaitera province.

Syria has for long accused Israel of aiding the radical militants in al-Qunaitera particularly after the Israeli authorities have recently provided medical treatment to injured rebels.

(Belga)

  16. Residents flee Raqqa after U.S.-led air strikes: witnesses...

Hundreds of residents fled Syria's northern city of Raqqa after U.S. warplanes struck positions held by Islamic State (IS) militants in the city, two witnesses there said on Tuesday.

"There is an exodus out of Raqqa as we speak. It started in the early hours of the day after the strikes. People are fleeing towards the countryside," one resident who goes by the name of Abo Mohamad told Reuters by telephone.

The U.S.-led coalition has carried out at least twenty strikes inside Raqqa province, a stronghold of the Islamic State group.

The attacks, which took place in the early hours of Tuesday, hit several buildings and military bases occupied by IS in the province, including the 93rd Brigade and Tabqa military airport, which the group seized last month, as well as the main administrative building in the city.

The two-storey building, which lies in a densely populated area in the city center, was used as an office by the group, which had turned its basement into a prison.

The fate of prisoners was not immediately clear.

"In the city itself, the destruction is not visible. You can barely notice it. Besides, the only thing that was damaged in the attack was the administrative building but it was not completely destroyed," Abo Mohamad said.

"The strike was so precise that it only hit the building itself, the surrounding houses were not damaged. They hit the building with four rockets."

Electricity in the city was cut off, residents said. Shops and markets were closed and the streets were empty except for fleeing residents packed in cars carrying a few belongings.......................http://www.todayonline.com/world/residents-flee-raqqa-after-us-led-air-strikes-witnesses

Le Pentagone a annoncé mardi dans un communiqué des frappes aériennes américaines contre les positions des djihadistes du groupe Etat islamique (EI) sur le territoire syrien. This week’s strike against Islamic State militants in Syria by the United States marked the first time that the Pentagon has deployed its F-22 Raptor jets into combat, the Defense Department acknowledged on Tuesday.

Lt. Gen. William Mayville, the director of ops for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, acknowledged during a Department of Defense briefing on Tuesday morning that the strikes launched by the US hours earlier were the first ever to involve F-22s — a fifth-generation aircraft that’s capable of dropping precisions bombs on targets from 15 miles away.

“What we were looking at were the effects we wanted to see on the target areas and what platforms in the region would be best suited to do that,” Mayville told reporters at the Pentagon. “We had a large menu of targets to strike from and we chose from there.

  24. A third night of US-led air strikes late on Wednesday targeted oil refineries in eastern Syria controlled by militants of the Islamic State group (IS), in a bid to choke off a crucial source of revenue for the militants.....

US, Saudi and Emirati warplanes broadened their bombardment to target the oil installations in eastern Syria that have helped fund the jihadist group's brutal rise from rebel faction to alleged global threat.

The raids focused on 12 targets in eastern Syria, where the IS extremists control small-scale oil refineries.

"These 12 targets were what we call modular oil refineries," Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby told CNN.

"They were struck with precision-guided missiles by coalition aircraft. In fact, there were more coalition aircraft in the skies on these particular missions than US (planes)," he said................http://www.france24.com/en/20140925-syria-airstrikes-target-held-oil-refineries/

  25. Cameron wants UK to join in airstrikes in Iraq...

Prime Minister David Cameron said late Wednesday that he wanted the British Parliament to approve joining international airstrikes against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group in Iraq after Baghdad requested London’s help.

Cameron announced the move in his address to the U.N. General Assembly.

In doing so, Cameron also recalled parliament to secure its approval for military action.

Parliament, which was in recess, will reconvene on Friday to vote on allowing Britain’s Royal Air Force to hit ISIS targets in northern Iraq. The action has the backing of all three main parties and is expected to comfortably pass.

Cameron spoke after U.S. planes pounded ISIS positions in Syria for a second day. But the strikes did not halt the fighters’ advance in a Kurdish area where fleeing refugees told of villages burnt and captives beheaded, Reuters reported..................http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2014/09/25/Cameron-wants-UK-to-join-in-airstrikes-in-Iraq.html

  26. Britain, Belgium and Denmark lined up Friday behind the United States in its fight against the Islamic State group, agreeing to military operations in Iraq - but drawing a line for now against direct intervention in Syria.....

Even the half-step of support, however, offered a boost to US President Barack Obama's effort to cast the fight as a global campaign to beat back a jihadist force that has assembled thousands of radical fighters and seized territory straddling Iraq and Syria..............http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/europe/3-European-nations-offer-limited-support-against-ISIS/articleshow/43599221.cms
