"Russophile" NATO ambassador accused of spying

LJUBLJANA -- Slovenian Ambassador to NATO Andrej Benedejčič has been called for consultations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after media reports accused him of spying....

The newspaper Reporter published an article saying that is Benedejčič was suspected of spying on behalf of Russia, reported the Slovenian news agency STA.

The ministry was asked whether the diplomat would be recalled "and what will be the next steps," and its officials said there was no official information on this subject yet, and that the claims against Benedejčič were "being checked thoroughly."

According to the newspaper, it was Poland that raised concerns within NATO that the Slovenian diplomat was "spying for Russia."

Benedejčič is a career diplomat and, according to the report, "a known Russophile who is considered a supporter of former President Danilo Turk" - another official of "pro-Russian orientation."

Turk appointed him to the NATO position in 2011. Benedejčič previously worked as director of the Slovenian MFA's General Affairs Directory, and before that served as ambassador to Russia.
