Afghanistan: UN envoy praises international troops after deadly attack

UN,  5 August 2014 – A “tragedy” is how the top United Nations official in Afghanistan summed up an attack on international forces today outside of Kabul in which a man wearing an Afghan military uniform reportedly gunned down at least 15 troops, including a high-ranking officer.

“International forces continue to perform a critical role in Afghanistan’s security and are providing critical training for the country’s future and stability,” said the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).


“The attack on these servicemen is a tragedy,” Ján Kubiš continued, extending his deepest condolences and sympathies to the families and friends of the victims.

According to media reports, the attacker wore an Afghan army military uniform when he opened fire inside a military academy. Among those hit was an Afghan commander.

    A bomb, killing one soldier and wounding four others, was detonated as an army convoy crossed the road in Baghdad's southern Al-Medain area, according to security sources.

    At least 13 more people were killed and 44 others were wounded when cars loaded with bombs exploded in southern Baghdad.

    Similarly, during a bomb blast in the al-Meamil district of Baghdad, three people died and 11 others were injured.

    No group has yet claimed responsibility for any of the attacks.
