“In Germany, there is something called ‘Alevism without Ali’, which is an atheist belief presented under the guise of Alevism, also supported by him [Gauck], and he projected it to us. In Turkey, there is no such Alevism. [Gauck] spoke the way that a small group in Germany, supported by Germans, speaks. This is improper,” Erdoğan said during his weekly parliamentary group meeting on April 29.
“That’s why he should act the way that statesmen do. He probably thinks that he is still a pastor. These are ugly matters,” Erdoğan said without elaborating on why a Christian cleric would busy himself with promoting godlessness.
- Gauck engaged in a mild verbal joust with President Abdullah Gül during a joint press conference on April 28, before speaking in harsher terms at Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) in calling Ankara to “respect the separation of powers.”
- Erdoğan said Gauck’s hardened rhetoric in the ODTÜ speech was different than the way the two talked in an April 28 meeting. “He went there and spoke oddly,” Erdoğan said.
Answering one of Gauck’s questions in the ODTÜ speech – “Why intervene in the judiciary when you have so much power after an important election victory?” –Erdoğan said his government “has no fear.”
Turkey’s prime minister also said he personally told Gauck that his government “will never tolerate [other countries] meddling in our country’s internal affairs.”

Bundespräsident Joachim Gauck mag bei seinem Besuch in der Türkei klare Worte gefunden haben, um die bedenklichen Rückschritte in Bezug auf Demokratie und Rechtsstaat seit dem vergangenen Sommer anzusprechen. "Erschreckend" und "besorgniserregend" nannte Gauck die Gängelung der Justiz, das Verbot mancher sozialer Medien und den Druck auf Journalisten und Redaktionen.
Aber klarer als der türkische Ministerpräsident Recep Tayyip Erdogan ist kaum jemand, wenn es darum geht zu kritisieren. Der Regierungschef und die regierungsnahen Medien nahmen Gauck umgehend in den verbalen Schwitzkasten.
"Seltsame Dinge" habe der deutsche Präsident vor türkischen Studenten gesagt, meinte Erdogan in einer Rede vor seiner Parlamentsfraktion. Erdogan warf Gauck am Dienstag vor, sich mit seiner Kritik an Demokratie-Defiziten in die inneren Angelegenheiten der Türkei eingemischt zu haben. Turkey's Cicek condemns Gauck's 'impolite' remarks...
ReplyDeleteGerman President Joachim Gauck's remarks on Turkey's internal affairs were politically incorrect and diplomatically impolite, Turkey's parliament speaker said on Wednesday.
At a conference in Turkey's prestigious Middle East Technical University on Monday, Gauck resembled Turkey to East Germany, saying the current style of leadership in Turkey threatened the freedom of speech and press.
"We see access to the internet and social networks curtailed, critical journalists made redundant and even condemned, newspapers banned from publishing and editors coming under pressure from the judiciary," he said.
Turkey's Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek told reporters at the parliament that Gauck's statement was disrespectful to Turkey's ruling and opposition parties.
"Millions of Turkish citizens live in Germany. Visits like this should contribute to the strengthening of ties between the two countries," Cicek said.
