Gunmen from Kiev attempted to seize Crimea's Interior Ministry overnight - Russia

Unknown armed men from Kiev have tried to seize the Crimean Interior Ministry overnight, and there were several injuries in that attack, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Thanks to the decisive action of self-defense squads, the attempt to seize the building of the Interior Ministry was derailed. This attempt confirms the intention of prominent political circles in Kiev to destabilize the situation on the peninsula,” the statement added.

"We believe it is extremely irresponsible to further pressure the already tense situation in the Crimea," the ministry stated stressing its concerns over the latest developments in the region.

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, appointed by the Verkhovna Rada, called on urgent work on a new law on language, which would offer guarantees for all national minorities.

On February 23, the Verkhovna Rada /parliament/ repealed the law on the state language policy, where 232 members of the parliament voted for the decision.

The law came into force on August 10, 2012. Under the law, the Russian language received a status of a regional one in the territories where at least ten percent of the population considered it to be their mother tongue. The government reported the Russian language received the status in the country’s 13 of 27 regions.
