Australian PM Tony Abbott sends his best wishes for Greek National Independence Day

"Australia is proud to be a friend of Greece," says Australian PM Tony Abbott:
I send my best wishes to everybody marking Greek Independence Day.
The commemorations which highlight the day’s historical significance also offer a chance to reflect more broadly on Greece’s heritage, including as the birthplace of democracy.
Greece has been the source of ideas that have changed the world. That is why people everywhere still look to Greece with respect and affection.

Australia and Greece share a long and strong friendship. It was forged on the frontline as Australian soldiers fought shoulder-to-shoulder with the Greek people in World War II.

It is a remarkable thing that 97 per cent of Greek-born Australians elect to become Australian citizens.
On this day we also reflect on the significant contributions made by the Greek Australian community to our country.
As a nation, we have found unity in our diversity, respect in our differences and have built a modern nation on the idea that anyone can get ahead provided they are prepared to “have a go”.
Australia is proud to be a friend of Greece and we will continue to build an even stronger relationship in the years ahead.
The Hon Tony Abbott MP
Prime Minister of Australia
