Otan/élargissement: aucune décision concrète. -Anders Fogh Rasmussen

L'Otan n'a adopté aucune décision concrète concernant l'adhésion de nouveaux membres, a indiqué mardi à Bruxelles le secrétaire général de l'Alliance Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

"La porte de l'Otan reste ouverte. En vertu du Traité de l'Atlantique nord, l'Alliance peut inviter des démocraties européennes qui se conforment aux critères requis pour l'adhésion à l'Otan. La décision d'élargir ou non notre Alliance, c'est une décision que l'Otan prendra sans ingérence de pays tiers. Si un pays candidat remplit les critères requis et que les 28 alliés sont d'accord, nous pourrons alors décider de nous élargir. Ni la Russie, ni aucun autre pays tiers n'y peuvent rien", a déclaré M.Rasmussen lors d'une conférence de presse conjointe avec le premier ministre monténégrin Milo Djukanovic.

Et de préciser que pour le moment, l'Alliance n'avait adopté aucune décision.

"A l'heure actuelle, nous nous préparons au sommet de l'Otan qui aura lieu au pays de Galles. Nous sommes en consultations avec les pays postulants (à l'adhésion à l'Alliance, ndlr). Quant à notre politique des portes ouvertes, il en sera question plus tard", a souligné le secrétaire général.

Le délégué permanent russe auprès de l'Otan Alexandre Grouchko a déclaré le 21 mars dernier que l'élargissement de l'Alliance à l'est pourrait créer des clivages à l'intérieur des pays candidats. Par ailleurs, il a souligné que la Russie se réservait le droit de prendre n'importe quelle décision afin de protéger ses intérêts légitimes en matière de sécurité. (fr.ria.ru)

• NATO Secretary General encourages Montenegro to maintain reform momentum...

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen described Montenegro as an important partner for the Alliance and welcomed the significant progress made in the reform process. Mr Fogh Rasmussen on Tuesday (25 March 2014) held talks with Prime Minister Milo Đukanović, who also met with the North Atlantic Council to discuss the progress in Montenegro’s reform agenda.

• The Secretary General thanked the Prime Minister for his country’s contribution to NATO’s mission in Afghanistan and for the positive role Montenegro plays in the Western Balkans. Commending the good progress made by Montenegro in implementing reforms, he said the momentum of implementing reforms will be key to the country’s Euro-Atlantic integration. “Continuing this hard work is the best way to bring Montenegro into NATO and the European Union,” said the Secretary General.

The Secretary General said Montenegro’s Membership Action Plan had identified key challenges that will need to be addressed, including reinforcing the rule of law, fighting corruption and organised crime and finding the resources to modernise the country’s armed forces. He also noted that more could be done to explain the importance of Euro-Atlantic integration to the public. Mr. Fogh Rasmussen stressed that Montenegro could count on the Alliance’s support. “NATO’s commitment to the Western Balkans is strong,” he said. “We see your future in the Euro-Atlantic family and we are determined to help you get there.”
