German FM calls for responsibility for Ukraine's national unity

BERLIN, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Saturday urged all parties in Ukraine to act in the interests of the country's territorial integrity and national unity.

"In this critical situation, all sides must be aware of their responsibility for the future and the national unity of Ukraine," Steinmeier said in a statement. He urged those with responsibility to halt the political escalation in the country.

"Maintaining communication channels and being willing to make compromises are more necessary then ever. The basis of all political decisions must be the upholding of Ukraine's territorial integrity and national unity," he said.
The minister noted that Ukraine now needs a functioning transitional government which can restore public order throughout the land. The deal signed by the Ukrainian government and the opposition on Friday, brokered by himself and the Polish and French foreign ministers, offers a reasonable road map for that, he added.......http://english.cntv.cn/20140223/101718.shtml

  2. Ukraine Foreign Ministry staffers demand minister's dismissal...

Staffers of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry appealed to the parliament on Saturday with a demand for the resignation of Acting Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara.

“Verkhovna Rada (the parliament) voted for the dismissal of Viktor Yanukovich as Ukrainian President for his failing to fulfil official duties,” they said in a collective appeal circulated by the ministry’s press service late on Saturday.

“In this regard, we believe that Acting Foreign Minister Kozhara has no moral right to represent the country on the international arena any longer” the appeal said, demanding the appointment of another person in charge of the ministry’s activity.

  3. Ukraine parliament names acting president, seeks government...

(Reuters) - Ukraine's parliament, exercising power since mass protests put the president to flight, named its new speaker as acting head of state on Sunday to replace Viktor Yanukovich and worked to form a new government.

In a hectic round of voting in the chamber, near where triumphant but wary protesters remain encamped on Kiev's main square, lawmakers stripped the still missing president of his abandoned country home. Its brash opulence, now on display, has fuelled demands that the Russian-backed, elected leader and his allies be held to account for corruption on a grand scale.

The European Union and Russia, vying for influence over the huge former Soviet republic on their borders, considered their next moves. EU officials said they were ready to help Ukraine, while Russia, its strategy of funding Yanukovich in tatters, said it would keep cash on hold until it sees who is in charge.

Parliament-appointed security officials announced legal moves against members of the ousted administration and those responsible for sniper fire and other police attacks on demonstrators in violence that left 82 dead in Kiev last week..................http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/23/us-ukraine-idUSBREA1G0OU20140223?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

  4. Yatsenyuk: no threat for Russian-speaking Ukrainians....

KIEV, February 23, 17:58 /ITAR-TASS/. Leader of the Batkivschina party faction in Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada, Arseny Yatsenyuk, is confident that there is nothing posing a threat for the Russian-speaking Ukrainians, he said

“It /the Russian-speaking population - eds. Itar-Tass/ is protected by the law,” Yatsenyuk said commenting on Verkhovna Rada’s decree on annulment of the law on state language policy. But he did not clarify which particular law ensured this protection.

MP Oleg Tyagnibok, leader of the far-right Svoboda party, promised to initiate a new bill on regional languages.

“That bill /on ethnic groups/ was adopted with a gross violation of law,” he said. “I had talks with some representatives of national minorities at the parliament. We will have to adopt a new law on languages in the shortest term, the law that will satisfy everybody.”

“I’m telling you that no ethnic group will be repressed in any issue including language,” Tyagnibok said.

  8. Moscow Accuses Ukraine's New Leaders of 'Dictatorial Methods'....

MOSCOW, February 24 (RIA Novosti) – The Russian Foreign Ministry said Monday that Ukraine’s new authorities aim to employ “dictatorial and sometimes terrorist methods” to suppress opposition in disloyal regions.

The statement follows the ouster of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych over the weekend, which has already aroused concerns that a surge of nationalism in the former Soviet nation could unfairly marginalize the substantial ethnic Russian community.

On Sunday, lawmakers also revoked a series of laws adopted by the previous government, including a bill recognizing Russian as an official language in regions where at least 10 percent of the population is Russian-speaking.

Moscow expressed doubts about the legitimacy of the parliament’s actions, saying that lawmakers “churn out ‘decisions’ and ‘laws,’ including those designed to infringe on the rights of Russians and other national minorities who live in Ukraine.”

“[The new leaders] aim to use dictatorial and sometimes terrorist methods to suppress disloyal citizens in various regions of Ukraine,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.................http://en.ria.ru/world/20140224/187856185/Moscow-Accuses-Ukraines-New-Leaders-of-Dictatorial-Methods.html
