OSCE group co-chairs express concern over use of force in Nagorno-Karabakh

VIENNA, January 25, /ITAR-TASS/. The co-chairs of the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, during the talks in Paris on Friday on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, expressed concern over the recent cases of use of force in the region.

The organization in a statement noted the co-chairs of the group (Russia, France and the United States), together with OSCE special envoy Andrzej Kasprzyk, noted, addressing Azerbaijani and Armenian Premiers Elmar Mamedyarov and Edvard Nalbandyan, who were participating in the talks, that such cases undermined the talks and obscured the prospects for the peaceful settlement.
The co-chairmen called on the parties of the conflict to fully and strictly comply with the terms of the armistice agreement.

The government heads and the members of the Minsk Group discussed the peaceful settlement process in light of the results of the Vienna meeting of the presidents of the two countries in November last year. The prime ministers reiterated the sides' readiness to continue the work aimed at the peaceful settlement of the conflict.

During the Paris round of the talks, the co-chairmen agreed to visit the region in the next few weeks to continue talks with the planned participation of the two presidents.

  1. Azerbaijani soldier killed by Armenian snipers ....

A lieutenant in the Azerbaijani army was killed when Armenian soldiers opened fire in violation of a ceasefire.

The incident took place along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border on Monday where Armenian snipers opened fire along the front lines in the Agdam region, according to a statement by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense.

Azerbaijan's Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov expressed his condolences to the loved ones of Lieutenant Sebuhi Ezizov, and stated that Ezizov would be honored with a 3rd degree "military service success” medal.

On Saturday, Azerbaijan's Ministry of Defence released a statement accusing Armenia of firing at the Azerbaijani border 201 times at various posts - causing Azerbaijan's forces to fire back.

The alleged violations of the ceasefire took place when an Azerbaijani army captain was shot dead by Armenian fire on Thursday. The statement also claimed that a civilian was injured and homes and a school were shelled.

The ceasefire was agreed to at the end of a three-year war between 1991 and 1994 over the sovereignty of the Nagorno-Karabakh region, after the disintegration of the Soviet Union.
