La ville historique de Maaloula est tombée lundi aux mains des rebelles qui ont enlevé douze religieuses du couvent orthodoxe de Mar Takla (Sainte Thècle).

ReplyDeleteThe U.S. and its allies have held direct talks with key Islamist militias in Syria, Western officials say, aiming to undercut al Qaeda while acknowledging that religious fighters long shunned by Washington have gained on the battlefield.
At the same time, Saudi Arabia is taking its own outreach further, moving to directly arm and fund one of the Islamist groups, the Army of Islam, despite U.S. qualms.
Both the Western and Saudi shifts aim to weaken al Qaeda-linked groups, which Western officials now concede are as great a danger in Syria as President Bashar al-Assad's regime.
Some officials in Western capitals remain wary about courting these groups, whose ultimate goal is to establish a state ruled by Islamic law, or Shariah, in Syria. Throughout the conflict, the U.S. and its allies have balked at sending powerful arms to any Islamists, fearing such shipments could end up in the hands of al Qaeda-backed forces.
The Saudis and the West are pivoting toward a newly created coalition of religious militias called the Islamic Front, which excludes the main al Qaeda-linked groups fighting in Syria—the Nusra Front and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham, known as ISIS.
Over the past two months, the militias, which command the loyalty of tens of thousands of fighters driving the conflict in Syria, have begun to consolidate their ranks. In late November, they announced they were banding together and forming the Islamic Front.
The more secular groups the U.S. has been backing have lost major ground to that group and the al Qaeda-linked forces, as well as to the Assad regime. Western diplomats estimate the new coalition accounts for about half of the rebels now fighting in the conflict.
The ascendancy of these militias spurred the Obama administration to authorize a senior U.S. envoy to meet with Islamist groups that aren't on State Department terrorist lists, according to a senior U.S. official.
The goal of the diplomacy, according to Western officials, is to persuade some Islamists to support a Syria peace conference in Geneva on Jan. 22, for fear that the talks won't yield a lasting accord without their backing. The outreach aims "to find out whether these people are worthwhile bringing into the diplomatic process," the U.S. official said.
More than two years into the civil war, the shift reveals the West's failure to unite Syria's fractious rebels under the banner of a secular opposition force capable of toppling the Assad regime. Jaafari: Saudi Releases Criminals from Jails, Sends Them to Syria ...
ReplyDeleteSyrian permanent envoy to the United Nations, Bashar al-Jaafari, accused the Saudi Arabia of releasing the criminals from its prisons in a bid to send them to Syria for the so-called “Jihad”.
At a press statement after a Security Council session in New York, Jaafari said that Saudi intelligence knows all Saudis who traveled to fight in Syria.
He added that a large number of them have been sentenced to death or to life imprisonment and they were released in return for going to "jihad" in Syria and kill the Syrians.
"The Saudi authorities release those criminals, the majority of them are affiliated to extremist, terrorist organizations like al-Qaeda, to send them to Syria through hidden agreements through which they are given amnesty in return for their travelling to Syria to kill the Syrians,” the Syrian envoy told reporters.
He added that those terrorists enter Syria through borders with Jordan, Lebanon while the others come through Turkey with facilitations by the Turkish, Qatari intelligence.
"At the same time when the Security Council recognizes that Nusra Front is a terrorist organization and the other groups are terrorists, some international officials name them as opposition," Jaafari said.
On the number of victims in Syria, the official news agency, SANA, quoted the Syrian envoy as saying: "We are regretful over the death of any Syrian citizen, wondering "Do you inform me about the number of soldiers and their average within the number of the victims, about the number of policemen, women or those who died because of the suicide explosions… the answer would be that we should take into consideration that all the victims are Syrians, and a lot of them were killed at the hands of the armed terrorist groups which are active in Syria by the instigation of external sides."

Syrie: "l'enlèvement" des soeurs de Maaloula, une désinformation d'Assad?....
ReplyDeleteLes rebelles syriens ont-il enlevé des religieuses du couvent de Maaloula au nord de Damas, pour s'en servir comme "boucliers humains", comme l'assure le régime de Bachar el-Assad? Pas si sûr.
Les soeurs du couvent de Mar Taqla, à Maaloula, servent-elles de "boucliers humains" aux mains des rebelles ou sont-elles "confortablement installées dans une maison de Yabroud"? Comme bien souvent dans la guerre qui déchire la Syrie, leur sort diverge, selon la source des informations.
Des rebelles syriens, dont des djihadistes du Front al-Nosra, se sont emparés lundi de la totalité de la ville de Maaloula, située à 55 km au nord de Damas.
Cette bourgade chrétienne qui doit sa renommée à ses refuges troglodytiques datant des premiers siècles du christianisme, compte un grand nombre d'églises et de couvents, dont celui de Mat Taqla ("sainte Thècle"). La majorité de ses habitants chrétiens sont grecs-catholiques et parlent l'araméen, considérée comme la langue du Christ. La petite ville était, avant la militarisation du conflit, majoritairement chrétienne l'été, quand des centaines de chrétiens de Damas et de l'étranger venaient y séjourner. Mais l'hiver, les musulmans étaient les plus nombreux. Maaloula est au coeur des combats entre l'armée et les rebelles depuis plusieurs mois. Et des accusations d'exactions contre les chrétiens ont déjà été proférées... et mises en doute (Le massacre des chrétiens de Maaloula a-t-il eu lieu?)
Après la prise de la ville par les rebelles, le nonce (ambassadeur) du Saint-Siège en Syrie, Mgr Mario Zenari, a affirmé que douze religieuses orthodoxes syriennes et libanaises avaient été emmenées de force de leur couvent. "Il semble que les rebelles djihadistes les aient conduites dans le Nord, vers Yabroud, a avancé le nonce. On ne connaît pas encore les motifs de cette action de la part des rebelles: s'il s'agit d'un enlèvement ou d'une prise de contrôle du couvent pour avoir la main libre à Maaloula".
Ce mercredi, le pape François a lancé un appel pour les soeurs et "toutes les personnes enlevées en raison du conflit" en Syrie.

Russia Urges Release of Abducted Orthodox Nuns in Syria...
ReplyDeleteMOSCOW, December 4 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s Foreign Ministry and the Russian Orthodox Church have demanded the release of a group of nuns reportedly captured by Islamist rebels at an ancient convent in Syria.
The nuns were taken away by armed men who broke into the Greek Orthodox convent of St Thecla on Monday in the village of Maaloula, some 50 kilometers from the Syrian capital Damascus.
There was some confusion over the number of women involved and whether they had been taken hostage by rebels or forcibly evacuated from the fighting in the village.
Vatican Radio reported that Pope Francis called at his general audience on Wednesday for prayers for the nuns of St Tecla “who were taken away by force by armed men”.
The Vatican’s ambassador to Syria, Mario Zenari, said that 12 nuns had been taken to the town of Yabrud, some 80 kilometers north of the capital, according to media reports.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry site reported that 13 nuns were missing including the Mother Superior, Pelagia Sayaf. Syria’s state news agency Sana said on Monday that Sayaf was one of six nuns trapped in the convent.
Konstantin Dolgov, the rights ombudsman at the Foreign Ministry in Moscow, urged the international community and rights organizations to condemn the incident, which has increased fears over the safety of Christians living in Syria.
“We call on those who kidnapped the nuns to free them immediately safe and sound,” Dolgov wrote on his Twitter account Wednesday.
The Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church also condemned the “cynical act of extremists” in a statement Wednesday and said that it was praying for the safe release of the nuns.
It expressed “full solidarity” with the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch John Yazigi, who appealed in a statement for “the kidnappers” to free the nuns and a group of orphans that had also been living at the convent.
Syria’s minority Christian communities have been a frequent target of extremist Islamist insurgents among rebel groups that have been fighting a civil war for almost three years against the regime of President Bashar Assad.
Two bishops and a priest have previously been kidnapped by rebels, but this is the first incident involving nuns.

ReplyDeleteΈκκληση για την απελευθέρωση των δώδεκα ελληνορθόδοξων μοναχών οι οποίες απήχθησαν από ενόπλους στη Μααλούλα αλλά και "όλων των ανθρώπων που κρατούνται όμηροι εξαιτίας των συγκρούσεων" στη Συρία απηύθυνε σήμερα ο πάπας Φραγκίσκος.
Μετά τον χαιρετισμό του προς τους 30.000 προσκυνητές που είχαν συγκεντρωθεί, όπως κάθε Τετάρτη, στην πλατεία Αγίου Πέτρου του Βατικανού, ο πάπας εξέφρασε την ανησυχία του για την τύχη των γυναικών που μόναζαν στην ελληνορθόδοξη μονή της Αγίας Θέκλας στη βόρεια Συρία. "Προσευχόμαστε για αυτές τις αδελφές και για όλους τους ανθρώπους που έχουν απαχθεί λόγω των συγκρούσεων. Ας συνεχίσουμε να προσευχόμαστε και να ενεργούμε από κοινού για την ειρήνη", πρόσθεσε.
Οι μοναχές, οι οποίες είχαν υπό την προστασία τους τα ορφανά παιδιά της περιοχής, υποχρεώθηκαν να εγκαταλείψουν τη μονή και οδηγήθηκαν από τους ενόπλους προς το Γιάμπρουντ, στα βόρεια της Μααλούλα, όπως είχε δηλώσει ο αποστολικός νούντσιος (πρεσβευτής) της Αγίας Έδρας στη Δαμασκό, Μάριο Ζενάρι.
Η Φεβρωνία Ναμπάνε, ηγουμένη μιας μονής που βρίσκεται στη Σαντνάγια, στη νότια Συρία, διαβεβαίωσε πάντως ότι μίλησε με την ηγουμένη της Μααλούλα, την Πελαγία Σαγιάφ, το βράδυ της Δευτέρας και η τελευταία την διαβεβαίωσε ότι η ίδια, άλλες έντεκα μοναχές και τρεις νεαρές υπηρέτριες έχουν εγκατασταθεί σε ένα σπίτι στο Γιάμπρουντ.
Από τις αρχές του έτους έχουν απαχθεί στη Συρία δύο ορθόδοξοι επίσκοποι και πολλοί ιερείς, μεταξύ των οποίων και ο Ιταλός ιησουίτης Πάολο Νταλ' Όλιο. Τον Οκτώβριο εντοπίστηκε στα βόρεια της Δαμασκού το κατακρεουργημένο πτώμα του ελληνορθόδοξου ιερέα Φάντι Τζαμίλ Χαντάντ, ο οποίος είχε απαχθεί από ενόπλους. Η τύχη των υπόλοιπων ομήρων παραμένει άγνωστη.
Σε σημερινό δημοσίευμά της η συριακή εφημερίδα αλ Ουάταν που πρόσκειται στην κυβέρνηση του προέδρου Μπασάρ αλ Άσαντ υποστηρίζει ότι οι Σύροι αντάρτες ευθύνονται για την απαγωγή των 12 μοναχών, τις οποίες σκοπεύουν να χρησιμοποιήσουν ως "ανθρώπινες ασπίδες".
"Οι δυνάμεις του συριακού στρατού καταφτάνουν στην περιοχή της Μααλούλα για να επιβάλουν την τάξη καθώς εκατοντάδες αντάρτες έσπειραν το χάος στην πόλη όπου εισέβαλαν από τα βουνά και άρπαξαν 12 Σύρες και Λιβανέζες μοναχές τις οποίες οδήγησαν στο Γιάμπρουντ" γράφει στο ρεπορτάζ της η εφημερίδα, υποστηρίζοντας ότι "οι αντάρτες θα τις χρησιμοποιήσουν ως ανθρώπινες ασπίδες".
Το Γιάμπρουντ φαίνεται ότι είναι ο επόμενος στόχος του συριακού στρατού που, με την υποστήριξη της λιβανικής Χεζμπολάχ και Ιρακινών σιιτών μαχητών, έχει εξαπολύσει μια ευρεία επίθεση για να ανακαταλάβει τη στρατηγικής σημασίας περιοχή του Καλαμούν, στα βόρεια της πρωτεύουσας. Σύμφωνα με το Συριακό Παρατηρητήριο Ανθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων "οι κυβερνητικές δυνάμεις σφυροκόπησαν τη νύχτα της Τρίτης προς την Τετάρτη ζώνες στην πόλη του Γιάμπρουντ" και υπάρχουν πολλοί τραυματίες. Επίσης, ένας αξιωματικός του στρατού σκοτώθηκε σε συγκρούσεις με άνδρες του Μετώπου αλ Νόσρα και με ισλαμιστές μαχητές στα περίχωρα της Μααλούλα.
