SYDNEY, December 28 (Itar-Tass) - China’s icebreaker The Snow Dragon has failed to make its way towards the Russian research ship the Akademik Shokalsky, trapped in ice off Antarctica, the Russian ship’s captain, Igor Kiselyov, has told Itar-Tass by telephone.
“The Chinese icebreaker stopped about 6.7 miles away from us,” Captian Kiselyov said. “It failed to come anywhere nearer.
Now we shall be waiting for the arrival of the Australian icebreaker The Aurora Australis. It is far more powerful that The Snow Dragon. I do hope that it will manage to make its way towards us.”
Kiselyov said the Australian icebreaker was expected to approach the Akademik Shokalsky at 19:00 local time (at about Sunday noon Moscow time). The ship that is the closest, France’s Astrolabe, is of no help, because it is far less powerful than the Chinese one and is surely unable to operate in such adverse ice conditions.
“We also pin some hopes on the wind,” Kiselyov said. “The temperature of water overboard is two degrees above freezing. The south-eastern wind measures seven meters per second. There is a huge iceberg, B09B, fifteen miles away from us. It is a major factor that causes the ice to get thicker. Should the wind’s direction change to western, north-western or south-western, we may try to get out on our own. However, according to the weather forecast I have such a change cannot be expected over the next few days.”
The Akademik Shokalsky has 74 people on board - 22 crew and 52 passengers - a group of scientists from the Australian Antarctic expedition and tourists.
“The situation on board is normal and business-like,” Kiselyov said. “No panic, no complaints. The crew keep doing their job. The scientists proceed with their research, drill ice, take water samples, hold science briefings and arrange lectures for each other and watch movies, in other words, find dozens of ways to get through this unusual experience.

- Navire russe bloqué dans l'Antarctique: un brise-glace chinois bloqué à son tour
Un brise-glace chinois qui devait porter secours à un navire scientifique russe bloqué par les glaces et le blizzard au large de l'Antarctique a lui-même été bloqué et a dû faire demi-tour, ont annoncé samedi les autorités maritimes australiennes.
Le brise-glace chinois Snow Dragon aurait dû rejoindre dans la soirée de vendredi le navire russe MV Akademik Shokalskiy, bloqué depuis mardi à une centaine de milles nautiques à l'est de la base française Dumont d'Urville avec 74 personnes à bord. Le Snow Dragon est parvenu à 6,5 milles nautiques du bâtiment russe mais n'a pu poursuivre sa route, a annoncé l'Autorité australienne de sécurité maritime (AMSA), qui coordonne les opérations de secours. "Le navire chinois a malheureusement rencontré de la glace épaisse qu'il n'est pas capable de briser", a indiquéAndrea Hayward-Maher, porte-parole de l'AMSA. "Pour cette raison, il ne sera pas en mesure de poursuivre sa route jusqu'à l'Akademik Shokalskiy. Il a fait demi-tour. Malheureusement, l'opération de secours a échoué".
Un responsable de l'AMSA, cité par la chaîne de télévision australienne ABC, a déclaré que d'autres options pour venir en aide au bâtiment russe seraient étudiées samedi. Depuis que le navire scientifique est bloqué, trois bâtiments ayant la capacité de briser la glace, le Snow Dragon chinois, le navire français L'Astrolabe et le navire australien Aurora Australis, se sont dirigés vers la zone pour tenter de lui porter secours. A bord de l'Akademik Shokalskiy se trouvent des scientifiques et des touristes qui reproduisent l'expédition historique menée dans l'Antarctique il y a un siècle (1911-1914) par l'explorateur australien Sir Douglas Mawson. Einsatz in der Antarktis: Eisbrecher "Schneedrache" scheitert mit Rettungsversuch....
ReplyDeleteDer chinesische Eisbrecher "Schneedrache" kann ein im Polareis eingeschlossenes Forschungsschiff mit Wissenschaftlern und Touristen an Bord nicht erreichen. Eine Sprecherin der australischen Behörde für Seesicherheit (Amsa) sagte nach Angaben des australischen Senders ABC vom Samstag, das Eis sei zu dick. Aus Sicherheitsgründen sei der Rettungsversuch nicht fortgesetzt worden.
Der Eisbrecher sei bis auf sechseinhalb nautische Meilen an die MV "Akademik Shokalskiy" herangekommen. Laut der chinesischen Ozeanbehörde kann der "Schneedrache" bis zu 1,1 Meter dickes Eis brechen.
Es sei unwahrscheinlich, dass nun ein französischer Eisbrecher bis zu dem Schiff vordringen könnte, hieß es von Amsa. Er sei etwa zwölf nautische Meilen (etwa 22 Kilometer) entfernt. Mit der Ankunft eines australischen Antarktis-Versorgungsschiffes sei nicht vor Sonntag zu rechnen.
Die 1982 in Finnland für die Sowjetmarine gebaute MV "Akademik Shokalskiy" ist eisverstärkt, aber kein regulärer Eisbrecher. Das Schiff sitzt seit dem ersten Weihnachtstag im Eis rund 2800 Kilometer südlich von Hobart fest.
An Bord sind nach Angaben der Behörde 74 Menschen. Darunter sind 26 Touristen, die mit Klimaforscher Chris Turney und Kollegen auf den Spuren eines Polarforschers unterwegs sind, der die Region vor 100 Jahren erkundete. Nach Angaben eines Wissenschaftlers hat das Forschungsschiff ausreichend Proviant an Bord, so dass die Besatzung noch nicht in Gefahr ist.

Anche i soccorsi bloccati dal ghiaccio Antartide, la nave russa resta in trappola....

Anche i soccorsi cinesi si sono arresi al ghiaccio. Quando mancavano soltanto 7 miglia nautiche (11 chilometri) all’obiettivo, la rompighiaccio Snow Dragon ha abbandonato la missione di salvataggio della MV Akademik Shokalskiy, la nave russa bloccata in Antartide. Troppo spesso (fino a 3-4 metri) il ghiaccio incontrato: “Non siamo in grado di spezzarlo”, ha comunicato un portavoce.
Questo è il terzo tentativo fallito. In precedenza la francese “L’Astrolabe” e l’australiana “Aurora Australis” avevano provato a trarre in salvo i 74 membri della spedizione scientifica senza successo.
La nave russa, intrappolata a 2700 km dalle coste australiane di Hobart (Tasmania) dalla vigilia di Natale, dovrà ora attendere un altro tentativo di soccorso. Intanto i membri dell’equipaggio fanno sapere di essere in buone condizioni e di avere ancora sufficienti scorte. E non hanno intenzione di interrompere la spedizione iniziata il 28 novembre dalla Nuova Zelanda. Il portavoce Chris Turney ha annunciato che, una volta liberati, proseguiranno nel viaggio.
Janet Rice, deputata del partito dei Verdi salpata dalla Nuova Zelanda insieme al resto della spedizione, ha raccontato che l’umore a bordo è ottimo: “Sembra di essere durante le vacanze estive quando il tempo è brutto e sei costretto a rimanere in casa a leggere libri e giocare a scarabeo. Ci hanno assicurato che non corriamo pericolo, dobbiamo soltanto aspettare con pazienza”.
