Gul received European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stephan Fule, according to a statement published on presidency's website.
“Opening a chapter is the right step forward,” said Gul. “Other new chapters should be opened without losing any time.”
Brussels opened on Tuesday a new chapter, Chapter 22 with Turkey after three years. The chapter, named as “Regional Policy and Coordination of Structural Instruments”, aims mainly at decreasing the socio-economic disparities among the regions within the union.
The accelaration in accession talks with 'Positive Agenda' should be maintained, said Fule. “EU agrees with Turkey on opening additional chapters.”
Turkey first applied to European Economic Community, predecessor of the EU, for membership in 1987. The negotiations has seen a troublesome and prolonged process while some Eastern European countries became a member such as Poland, Hungary and Romania, all of which applied later than Turkey.
- For the last three years, talks between EU and Turkey slowed to a near halt amid strong opposition from Germany and France.

ReplyDeleteANKARA (AA) - More democracy in Turkey means more respect and recognition, diversity of Turkish society and private choices of life styles of Turkish citizens, said EU's top official for enlargement Stefan Fule.
Fule told a press conference on Friday he discussed the EU accession process, democratic reforms, fundamental rights, judiciary, new constitution and the roles of the civil society in political life with Turkish government officials and the members of the civil society during his visit to Turkey.
He expressed pleasure that after a long halt a new chapter was opened for Turkey's EU entry.
Stating that there is momentum now created with the opening of Chapter 22 and accesion talks have got back on track he said "We need to make this momentum sustainable. We need more engagement with Turkey".
"This can be best achieved in an active credible accession process and to make this happen we need to roll up our sleeves and work hard," he added.
Fule said the EU Commission was ready to push for more EU engagement.
"We expect Turkey to do its share to continue its political reforms and to implement them," he said. "All the reforms in the judicial and democratization packages aim to strengthen democracy. I believe that further democratic reforms will reinforce the rights of citizens in Turkey."
He expressed hope that the EU would sign the Turkey-EU Readmission Agreement and launch the visa dialogue before the end of 2013, which will allow Turkish citizens to travel to Europe with no visa requirements.

Φούλε και Γκιουλ συζήτησαν Κυπριακό και ευρωπαϊκή πορεία της Τουρκίας....
ReplyDeleteΕπιθυμούμε την άμεση έναρξη των διαπραγματεύσεων στην Κύπρο δήλωσε ο Ευρωπαίος Επίτροπος, Στέφαν Φούλε και ο Τούρκος Πρόεδρος, Αμπντουλάχ Γκιουλ ανέφερε ότι αναμένει από την ηγέτες της ΕΕ να προσεγγίσουν την ευρωπαϊκή πορεία της Τουρκίας με μια στρατηγική ματιά και να ακολουθήσουν μια προσέγγιση με όραμα και θάρρος.
Όπως μεταδίδεται στα κατεχόμενα, σύμφωνα με την ιστοσελίδα της Τουρκικής Προεδρίας, ο κ. Γκιουλ δέχθηκε τον κ. Φούλε με τον οποίο συζήτησαν συνολικά την διαδικασία της ευρωπαϊκής πορείας της Τουρκίας. Ο Τούρκος Πρόεδρος σημείωσε ότι βασική προτεραιότητα για την χώρα του είναι να ολοκληρώσει με επιτυχία την διαδικασία των διαπραγματεύσεων και από αυτό θα ωφεληθούν και οι δύο πλευρές, όπως πρόσθεσε.
«Σε αυτό το θέμα περιμένουμε από τους ηγέτες της ΕΕ να προσεγγίσουν την ευρωπαϊκή πορεία της Τουρκίας με μια στρατηγική ματιά και να ακολουθήσουν μια προσέγγιση με όραμα και θάρρος. Το άνοιγμα ενός νέου κεφαλαίου είναι ένα βήμα προς τη σωστή κατεύθυνση. Χωρίς να χάνουμε χρόνο πρέπει να ανοίξουν και τα άλλα κεφάλαια».
Από την πλευρά του ο κ. Φούλε, είπε ότι μοιράζονται την ίδια ιδέα με την Τουρκία πως πρέπει να ανοίξουν και τα επιπρόσθετα κεφάλαια, λέγοντας πως στην συζήτησή του με τον κ. Γκιουλ στάθηκαν ιδιαίτερα πάνω σε κάποια κεφάλαια. Στο Κυπριακό, συμπλήρωσε, επιθυμούν όπως οι δύο πλευρές αρχίσουν άμεσα διαπραγματεύσεις.
