είπε ότι συμφωνεί με τον Χέιγκελ, κι υποστήριξε πως (η χρήση χημικών
όπλων από τις τακτικές δυνάμεις της Συρίας) είναι πιθανή «100%».

- Στελέχη του Πενταγώνου δεν είχαν αποκαλύψει ως σήμερα ποιες είναι οι εκτιμήσεις τους περί του κόστους στο οποίο θα ανερχόταν η ανάληψη στρατιωτικής δράσης εναντίον της Συρίας. Όμως ένας εκπρόσωπος του Πενταγώνου είπε σήμερα ότι το πλήγμα αυτό θα μπορούσε να χρηματοδοτηθεί με υπάρχοντες πόρους του υπουργείου Αμύνης και χωρίς να υποβληθεί αίτημα προς το Κογκρέσο προκειμένου να εγκριθεί πρόσθετη χρηματοδότηση.

Syria vote: Clarke suggests US wanted 'quick' UK decision...
ReplyDeleteThe White House wanted the UK to hold a "quick vote" on Syria amid the clamour for an international response to the use of chemical weapons, a Cabinet minister has suggested.
Ken Clarke told Channel 4 News "the Americans wanted us to make this vote very quickly" but the "trauma" of Iraq led to defeat for the call for action.
Earlier, David Cameron vowed to remain engaged diplomatically in the crisis.
But the BBC's Nick Robinson said the UK may find itself sidelined at the G20.
The crisis in Syria will dominate the summit of world leaders starting in St Petersburg on Thursday, with US President Obama and French counterpart Francois Hollande pressing for a united stance on the need for limited military strikes against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
But having ruled out any UK involvement, Mr Cameron could find himself peripheral to discussions about military preparations, our political editor said.
'Rush to war'
Speaking at prime minister's questions, Mr Cameron said he regretted last week's vote on military action, which the government lost, but vowed to use all of Britain's diplomatic "muscle" to try and bring both sides together for Syria peace talks.

ReplyDeleteWASHINGTON, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Wednesday testified in a House of Representatives hearing about Syria, striving to sell President Barack Obama's plan for a punitive strike against the government of Bashar al-Assad for alleged use of chemical weapons.
Kerry, echoing Obama, said the "red line" against the use of chemical weapons wasn't drawn by the president alone, but "this is about the world's red line," while promising the House Foreign Relations Committee that there would be no boots on the ground in a strike against Syria.
"We have no intention of assuming responsibility for Assad's civil war," said Kerry, who raised some eyebrows Tuesday for suggesting the possibility of sending ground troops into Syria during a Senate hearing.
Kerry also said the administration is working feverishly to gain international support for a Syria strike, and the U.S. side has "reached out to over 100 countries," adding several allies in the Middle East have "offered to be part of this operation." He didn't identify those countries.
"I will be meeting with the foreign ministers of Europe, the 28 foreign ministers in Vilnius on Saturday. This will clearly be a topic of discussion. And many of them have had reservations, waiting for the evidence. So I see many more countries joining," said Kerry.

Hagel Cites Russia as Source of Syrian Chemical Weapons...
ReplyDeleteWASHINGTON, September 4 (RIA Novosti) – US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Wednesday that Russia was a supplier of chemical weapons to the Syrian military, but the Pentagon quickly backed off the claim and said Hagel was referring to conventional weapons.
Speaking in testimony before the foreign affairs committee of the US House of Representatives, Hagel said: “There’s no secret that the Assad regime has had chemical weapons, significant stockpiles of chemical weapons.”
Pressed by a representative to name the origin of those chemical weapons, Hagel added: “The Russians supply them, others are supplying them with those chemical weapons, they make some themselves.”
He did not provide further details.
Russia has long stated that it sells only conventional weapons to Syria, that these transfers are in strict compliance with international law and regulations and that they in no way modify the balance of power in the volatile region.
There was no immediate official response to Hagel’s comments from Moscow. But a Russian military expert there poured scorn on the remarks.

"Les pays arabes nous ont effectivement proposé de couvrir les frais de l'opération militaire (...). Nous examinons cette proposition", a indiqué le chef de la diplomatie américaine s'exprimant devant le comité des Affaires étrangères de la Chambre des représentants.
La Ligue arabe a exclu la Syrie de ses rangs, tandis que certains pays arabes à majorité sunnite fournissent des armes à l'opposition syrienne combattant les forces fidèles au président Bachar el-Assad. China says Syria strike would hurt world economy...

"Military action would have a negative impact on the global economy, especially on the oil price - it will cause a hike in the oil price," Vice Finance Minister Zhu Guangyao told a briefing on the sidelines of a Group of 20 summit.

The General noted that Washington uses not only political leverage, but special tactics including sending of Al-Qaeda militants to Syria, in order to overthrow President Bashar Assad. Soleimani expressed confidence that “the last excuse invented by the White House to justify the attack on Syria will not lead to a result desired by the US”. The Iranian officer said that “95% of Syrian opposition militants are foreigners, and the rest is represented by military absentees from the Syrian army and by local Islamists”.
However, Iran’s Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan excluded the possibility of Iranian army’s direct participation in the possible military conflict in Syria. “Syria has its own air defense system,” he said.
Wednesday, September 4, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani stated that any aggression against Syria “will not only negatively impact the situation in the region, but will also affect US allies in the Middle East”. “Proceeding from its religious and humanitarian commitments Iran will work on helping the Syrian nation in case any problem emerges,” he stressed.

No law will stop Obama’s democracy-bombs over Syria...
ReplyDeleteRegardless of how Congress votes, Obama is going to attack Syria. The president is doing his best to avoid constructive dialogue when the focus should be international law, not ‘international norms’ as defined by Washington.
As world leaders descend on the Russian city of St. Petersburg to discuss global tax regimes and international trade, this year’s G20 Summit is really a G20+1, with an extra seat allocated for the massive elephant in the room.
Many of the leaders attending have brought along their foreign ministers, as the summit will also informally serve as a global platform to discuss the sorry state of affairs in Syria. One can only speculate as to the substance of any exchanges between President Putin and his American counterpart and forced smiles will be in no short supply.
“He is lying and knows he is lying. It’s sad,” said Putin, of John Kerry’s address to the US Congress. That about sums it up – the lies and deceit of the Obama administration are so breathtaking, so innumerable, and they’re being trumpeted knowingly and shamelessly. Want a taste of highly moral and ethical narrative being championed in favor of “the Syrian people?” Look no further than the New York Times, with its recent headline “Bomb Syria, Even If It Is Illegal,” which argues that Obama and his poodles should “declare that international law has evolved and that they don’t need Security Council approval to intervene in Syria."
The establishment press is calling for blood, and they're claiming the moral high ground while doing it – slightly pathological? You bet. The insane are really running the asylum on this one.
The Russians have been pushing for Geneva II with focused perseverance, but Barry and his flesh-eating rebels aren’t going to let that happen – not without a substantial sprinkling of Tomahawk cruise missiles over Damascus at the very least. The trigger-happy White House, with the most sophisticated military arsenal in the history of man, has demonstrated that it is unwilling to acknowledge any evidence that contradicts its cooker-cutter narrative – it is not open to reasoned arguments, and so the world yet again faces a dangerous precedent due to US intransigence.

NYT: Obama orders Pentagon to expand list of Syria targets...
ReplyDeleteUS President Barack Obama has directed the Pentagon to expand the list of potential targets in Syria following reports Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces have moved troops and equipment used to employ chemical weapons in anticipation of a US-led strike against them, The New York Times reported on Thursday.
In order to degrade Assad's ability to use chemical weapons, the list of 50 or so major sites has to be expected, officials told the Times.

Syrie : les Etats-Unis préparent une opération plus importante que prévue...Selon le "Los Angeles Times", les bombardements devraient durer trois jours....

Alors que les présidents français et américains s'emploient à convaincre leurs alliés de la nécessité de frapper le régime de Bachar Al-Assad, l'armée américaine revoit ses plans. Selon le Los Angeles Times (en anglais) dimanche 8 septembre, les stratèges américains préparent une campagne de trois jours.
"Il y aura plusieurs salves et une évaluation après chaque raid, mais le tout limité à 72 heures et une indication claire lorsque nous aurons terminé", a déclaré au journal un officier au courant des plans militaires. L'intervention prendrait la forme d'un massif barrage de tirs de missiles, suivi rapidement par d'autres attaques sur des cibles manquées ou non détruites après l'attaque initiale.
Cette opération ne devrait pas modifier le rapport de force sur le terrain
La participation de bombardiers de l'armée de l'Air, aux côtés du porte-avion USS Nimitz et des autres navires stationnés en Méditerranée et en mer Rouge, est désormais envisagée. Deux officiers américains ont déclaré au journal que la Maison Blanche avait demandé une liste d'objectifs élargie pour inclure "beaucoup plus" que la liste initiale d'environ 50 objectifs.
Toujours selon des militaires américains, cette opération "n'aura pas d'impact stratégique sur la situation actuelle dans la guerre, que les Syriens ont bien en mains, mais le combats pourraient durer encore deux ans de plus". L'administration américaine tente en effet de trouver un juste milieu entre sa volonté de frapper le régime syrien et les réticences d'une partie du Congrès, qui se prononce lundi sur une éventuelle intervention.
Dans une ultime tentative de convaincre sénateurs et électeurs, le président américain accordera lundi une interview avec les trois grands réseaux de télévision et les chaînes PBS, CNN et Fox News. Barack Obama adressera ensuite un message à la nation.

ReplyDeleteDer US-Einsatz gegen Diktator Assad soll länger dauern als bekannt – offenbar plant US-Präsident Obama einen mehrtägigen Angriff. Dabei soll auch ein Flugzeugträger im Roten Meer zum Einsatz kommen.
Die USA planen offenbar einen intensiveren und längeren Militäreinsatz in Syrien als bislang bekannt. Wie die Zeitung "Los Angeles Times" am Sonntag unter Berufung auf zwei US-Regierungsvertreter berichtete, bat das Weiße Haus das Verteidigungsministerium um eine erweiterte Liste mit "vielen weiteren" als den bislang vorgesehenen rund 50 Zielen für Angriffe in Syrien. Ziel sei es, zusätzliche Feuerkraft zu mobilisieren, um den stark zerstreuten Streitkräften von Machthaber Baschar al-Assad Schaden zuzufügen.
Das Pentagon plant dem Bericht zufolge nun, Luftwaffen-Bomber, fünf im Mittelmeer stationierte Zerstörer sowie außerhalb der syrischen Flugabwehr abgefeuerte Marschflugkörper und Luft-Boden-Raketen einzusetzen. Selon le chef de la marine américaine, le coût de possibles frappes militaires en Syrie ne devrait "pas être extraordinaire" pour les Etats-Unis. Le secrétaire américain à la Défense, Chuck Hagel, a évoqué mercredi 4 septembre une addition de "plusieurs dizaines de millions de dollars". La plupart des navires lance-missiles dans la zone "étaient là-bas de toute façon" dans le cadre de leur déploiement habituel, explique le chef de la marine américaine, mettant à part le cas du porte-avions Nimitz et des trois destroyers et du croiseur qui constituent son escorte. Ce groupe aéronaval qui devait rentrer aux Etats-Unis à l'issue d'un déploiement dans la région du Golfe a été redirigé vers la mer Rouge.
Le coût hebdomadaire d'un destroyer en déploiement est de 7 millions de dollars (environ 5,3 millions d'euros), celui d'un groupe aérien (les quelque 80 appareils que compte un porte-avions) est de 25 millions de dollars (environ 19 millions d'euros) pour des "opérations de routine", et de 40 millions de dollars (environ 30 millions d'euros) en cas d'opérations soutenues.
Hormis l'éventuel recours à des frappes effectuées à l'aide de bombardiers furtifs B-2, le coût de frappes devrait donc essentiellement dépendre du nombre de missiles Tomahawk tirés par l'US Navy. Ces missiles ont déjà été payés, il faudrait en revanche que la marine les remplace à l'avenir s'ils étaient lancés. Pour le seul premier jour de l'intervention en Libye, 110 Tomahawks avaient été tirés. La participation américaine à l'opération avait coûté au total un milliard de dollars (environ 760 millions d'euros).
Sept mois en Libye ont coûté 300 millions d'euros à la France
Quid de la France ? A titre d'exemple, l'engagement français dans le conflit en Libye en 2011 a coûté environ 300 millions d'euros pour une durée de sept mois, selon le ministère de la Défense de l'époque. Premier poste de dépense : les munitions.
