Turkey denies kidnapped Syrian bishops held in Turkey. These claims are totally unrealistic.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has dismissed the claims that two kidnapped Syrian bishops were held in Turkey.

Greek Orthodox Bishop Boulos Yaziji and Syriac Orthodox Bishop Yohanna Ibrahim were kidnapped April 22 in Syria by armed men en route from the Turkish border.

“These claims are totally unrealistic. It is clear that these claims, which we regret, serve some circles’ own interests and aim to leave Turkey in a difficult situation,” the written statement said, referring to some reports that the clergymen were being held inside Turkey.

“It is beneficial to reiterate these facts: Turkey wishes for the bishops to be released as soon as possible and to that end it is making every effort. But, the abduction took place outside Turkey so efforts are limited. Within this framework, Turkey, like many other countries, is making contributions to secure their release.”

Muslims against Christians, Sunnis against Shiites, Arabs against themselves, thousands of casualties each month, but that does not bother to blame the Jews.

Isnt it rathing meaningless to state that they are not in Turkey, when the truth is that we have no idea where they are? They could of course be in Turkey, but they could also be somewhere else. We simply can not know what is going on in every single little cave in that part of the country. The important thing is that Turkey has nothing to do with it, and I am sure we dont.

  2. No: 221, 12 August 2013, Press Release Regarding the Allegations that the Kidnapped Syriac Metropolitans are in Turkey...

It has been brought to our attention that several allegations have been raised concerning Paul Yazigi, Metropolitan of Aleppo of the Antioch Orthodox Patriarchate and Johanna İbrahim, Syriac Orthodox Metropolitan of Aleppo, who were kidnapped in Syria on 22 April 2013, including that the said persons are being kept in Turkey.

The allegations in question are totally unsubstantiated. It is obvious that these regretful allegations have been put forward by certain quarters for serving their own interests, and to leave Turkey in a difficult situation.

It is deemed useful to remind once again the following facts: Turkey, resenting the kidnapping of two religious functionaries hopes that the said persons would be released as soon as possible and is ready to provide every kind of support for this purpose. However, the limits that Turkey could do for the release of the persons in question are certain and restricted, as the kidnapping and the following process have taken place in another country, outside the territory of Turkey. Within this framework, as explained, Turkey, like many other countries, is striving to make its contributions to the efforts exerted for the release of the religious functionaries within its capabilities.

These facts have been expressed by H.E.Ahmet Davutoğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey to the representatives of Syriac community as well, whom he received on July 19, 2013.
