Imam Khamenei said, as he received Iranian President Sheikh Hasan Rouhani and cabinet members, that “Western powers’ intervention in Syria or any other country would only fuel the flames of war and conflict, and deepen peoples’ anger towards it.”
His eminence added that “these interventions would be similar to a spark which hit a barrel of gunpowder.”
On the Egyptian situation, Imam Khamenei stressed that “Iran does not want to interfere in Egypt’s internal affairs,” indicating that “killing unarmed protestors is condemned by everyone.”

William Hague plays down imminence of Syria attack as UN seeks more time...
ReplyDeleteTalks could take days, foreign secretary says as pressure mounts on west to let weapons inspectors finish their job.
William Hague has played down the prospects of an imminent attack on Syria, saying talks about the crisis could go on at the United Nations "over the coming days".
Speaking after a meeting of Britain's National Security Council, the foreign secretary said the UN security council should "shoulder its responsibility" over Syria; if it failed to do so, however, Britain and and its allies would act on their own.
"This is the first use of chemical warfare in the 21st century," he said. "It has to be unacceptable. We have to confront something that is a war crime, something that is a crime against humanity."
Britain and the other four permanent members of the security council have begun talks in New York on a resolution proposed by Britain that would authorise the use of military force in Syria as a response to its use of chemical weapons last week.
Russia and China are firmly opposed to a security council resolution allowing force, and British government officials admit their initiative is likely to fail. But Labour said on Wednesday it would not support the government in Thursday's Commons vote unless ministers had tried to win security council agreement.....http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/aug/28/syria-crisis-labour-cameron-commons

Sources: Saudi Arabia raises military alertness over Syria...
ReplyDeleteDOHA/CAIRO - Saudi Arabia, a supporter of rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad, has raised its level of military alertness in anticipation of a possible Western strike in Syria, sources familiar with the matter said on Friday.
Saudi Arabia's defense readiness has been raised to "two" from "five", a Saudi military source who declined to be named told Reuters. "One" is the highest level of alert.
"It is a must, no one knows what will happen," he said.
The source said other countries in the region, including Jordan, Turkey and Israel, appeared also to have raised their level of military readiness.
A second source said Saudi Arabia's defense readiness had been raised last week, and meant that all leave for the armed forces would be cancelled.
The sources declined to give further details of what a change in alert level would mean, but analysts said it was likely some forces would be moved closer to national borders.
